Default Applying for Passport

Hi there!

Could someone please tell me what is the procedure for applying for a passport after one gets Naturalized and has the certificate? I just want to have the information beforehand. Do I need to send in the original certificate with the application etc. etc.? What other paperwork is required?

Any input would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

First, you need to have 2 passport photos (must be taken by someone who does passport photos). You can even get this done at Walmart.

Secondly, you need to fill out a form for a first-time passport. http://travel.state.gov/get_forms.html

Then you take these to a post office where they do passports along with your naturalization certificate. You pay the fees involved for standard processing (it only takes less than 2 weeks @ standard speed). I remember that they would take some of the total charge on credit card and some of it had to be by check or cash.

You get your passport mailed to you in a big brown envelope from New Orleans along with your naturalization certificate returned to you.

At many oath ceremonies, there are U.S. Passport Service tables available
before you exit which are taking in passport applications. You will have to
be ready with the necessary requirements. You do have to give up your
naturalization certificate. It is mailed back to you later.

Even if you wait and apply for a passport at a U.S. post office, you have to
give up the naturalization certificate. It will be mailed back to you.

Great, thank you for all the input. I was just thrown off by the "Applying In Person" wording. I didn't realize that still involves mailing in the application.

right, that's if you want to do it that way (right after the ceremony) and stand in line with 100 or so other people. You may just want to hit the road and get back to your home town first. driving while sleepy, not a good idea
