This question is on my friends behalf:
She was here on a J1 Visa which was to expire May of 2002. She married a USC in April of 2002. She hired a lawyer to do her AOS and her application date is 5/31/02 (She said her lawyer filed with the local office here in NY). She already received her EAD Card in October, and also got permission to travel. She doesn't have a case number because she never received a I-797 form, so there is no way of checking the status of her application. She has the following questions:
1. How long will it be to get the interview?
2. Where can she find out how her case is doing?
Thanks for your help.

I don't know if they have a phone number in NY, Seattle has none and they say they would answer fax or email within 65 days.
As walk-in I had about 4 hours waiting time, but found out what I wanted to know.
She might bring a good book.

Did she get any kind of receipt for the fee? Maybe just a small piece of
paper, like a store till receipt? That would have her receipt number on it.
If no, can she get a copy of the check that she sent for the filing fee? On
the check will be written the INS's 'receipt number', it is the same thing
as the case number that would have appeared on the fee receipt. Then she
can use that receipt number in calling the INS or querying online.
Her bank should be able to supply her a copy of the processed check, she may
have to pay for the copy. I did that recently, to get my receipt number for
my I-751 (I had to because I haven't received the expected letter from INS
which would give the receipt number)

Tell your friend that she only filed in May of this year. She will NOT hear anything from NYC INS until, at minimum, February or March of 2003. And then she will only hear that she is to go for fingerprinting and perhaps receive an appointment letter for the AOS interview for sometime in July or thereafter. NYC does not issue I-797's. In fact, there are relatively few that do. There is no "case" number and there is no way to follow up on the status via phone with this INS office.
Our wait for AOS interview was 21 months with this office. At present they have upped their waiting time from the traditional 14-18 months to 18 to 25 months. Remind her that calling the 1-800 number for INS is futile as they cannot tell her anything about her status. Since she has an attorney of record, her attorney should have received the small cash register receipt which might or might not has a case number on it. Remind her as well that she must file in ample time for the renewal of the advance parole and EAD if she wishes these documents to remain current. She can either file for renewal herself or through her attorney.
