Default AOS Jacksonville, FL

For anyone interested, I have posted our AOS Interview experiece (AOS
from K-1)on kamya.com It's the least I could do after all the help
this newsgroup, Rete in particular, has provided over the past
(almost) 4 yrs.

I now have Permanent Resident status (no Conditions to be removed as
we've been married for almost 3 years), and I have temporary proof (
I-551 stamp, valid for one year) in my passport while I await my
'Green Card' - to follow in 3 to 4 months....hopefully! :-)

Interview was very quick and (almost) pleasant. :-) This was our third
AOS interview appointment; we had to reschedule two previous
interviews because my husband was overseas on military deployments
both times. So, third time lucky, I guess. :-)

The documents we took (originals and photocopies) were as follows:

The Interview Letter
My Passport with I-94
My Birth Certificate
Lease
Utility Bills (Phone, Electric & Direct TV)
Life Insurance proof of Beneficiary Forms (for both of us).
Marriage Certificate
Tax Transcripts for 2001, 2002, .....forgot 2003!!!
W2's for 2001,2002,2003
Car Insurance Policy
Car Loan Agreement
Medical & Dental Insurance Cards
Military ID
Vaccination Supplement (cost $25 for a USCIS Designated Civil Surgeon
to copy from my GP's record to USCIS Form)
Letters from both our employers showing Emergency Contact and marital
status claimed.
Receipt from furniture store showing a recent large purchase.
2 Bank Statements

We were not asked for an updated I-864, although we had prepared one
just in case because the original was submitted in 2001 when my
husband was in the Military. He's now retired Military and has a new
employer, but although the AO knew this he still did not ask for an
updated Affidavit of Support.

As others have said before, preparation is the key. I can't overstress
that enough - even though I actually forgot our 2003 IRS 1040A Form!!!
lol Our AO was initially adamant that he needed it, but as I started
scrambling through our paperwork (with a panic-stricken look on my
face!)he suddenly changed his mind and told us, "It's ok. Forget it."
Phew!
Our interviewer was very pleasant and although he was officious, he
was not intimidating in the slightest. My husband even asked HIM a
couple of personal questions!! (I could've crawled under the desk!
lol).

For those still waiting for your interview I hope your wait isn't too
long and I wish you every success.

Yahoo, Ellie. Congratulations on the approval and for your hubby finally being home. Now you can truly start enjoying your marital bliss.

If you decide to become a US Citizen, please stop by the newsgroup. And if you have the time and patience, your assistance to newbies will always be welcomed.

And thanks for posting to Kamya. I appreciate as will others following you using Jacksonville.

Best regards,

Thank you so much, Rete. If I can be of any assistance to others I'm
more than happy to oblige. It's the least I can do, given the
invaluable help and support I've received here over the years. :-)

Unfortunately, we're not quite 'done' with USCIS as we are still
awaiting my son's AOS Interview appointment to be scheduled. You may
remember that his father sent him here to vacation with me in November
2002 then promptly refused to accept our son back into his care, to
the point of refusing to collect him from the airport if he returned
to the UK. That meant my son violated the VWP, through no fault of his
own. My husband filed I-130 and I-485 for him in February, 2003 and we
have receipts from USCIS Jacksonville that they are processing both
applications. I've checked online to find the status of the
applications, but when I punched in the Receipt Notice numbers they
were not recognized. :-(

When it comes time for my son's AOS Interview I have written proof
from my ex-husband stating that he refuses to accept our son back into
his care. I also have written proof from my son's school back in the
UK stating that they expected him to return to school following his 2
week vacation. The school have also confirmed my ex-husband told them
our son would only be absent from school for 2 weeks, the duration of
his supposed 'vacation'. Additionallly, I have written proof from
Social Work Services confirming my son's father's refusal to accept
our son back into his care, along with written proof that he
threatened to abandon our son into the care of Social Work Services
(at the time I had no knowledge of this as my ex-husband refused to
allow me to maintain contact with our son, albeit he had no legal
right to do so). My ex-husband and I have joint custody of our son,
but I submitted a signed, notarized Affidavit of Consent from my
ex-husband giving his permission for our son to reside with me in the
US. Hopefully, USCIS will not perceive my son's entry to the US as
pre-meditated attempt of Immigration Fraud, because it surely was not.
Happliy, my son, now aged 15yrs, has settled well here and is doing
extremely well at school. Needless to say, I'm delighted he is with
me, even although it was initially his choice to reside with his
father in the UK and continue at school with his peer group. No doubt,
I shall be seeking advice/assistance when it comes time for my son's
AOS Interview. Unfortunately, that will be in Memphis, TN as we're
relocating there next week ( I say 'unfortunately' because it's a long
way for us to travel as we're moving to North Central TN). We've
completed the AR-11 Form and my husband has submitted the sponsor's
change of address form. Our AO also took note of our new address so my
Green Card would be sent to the correct address in 3-4 months, or
however long it takes for it to arrive.

Please keep your fingers crossed that everything goes well for my son
and thank you once again for your kind best wishes. :-)

Thanks for reminding me of the issue with your son. Yes, I do the episode and but the name that went with the story. Has he adjusted well to the change of location and more importantly, has he learned to deal with his father's abandonment of him? Wouldn't you just love to hang him up by his {fill in the blank}?

That is some move you two are undertaking. Florida to the mountains of Tennessee. I had a girlfriend who moved a number of years back to Gatlinburg, TN and absolutely loves it. Of course she regales me with stories about life in rural towns. However, she would never move back to New York and absolutely loves her lifestyle in Tennessee.

Best of luck to you three.

Thanks for your good wishes, Rita,

I've got mixed feelings about moving to TN, but I'm looking at it as
an 'adventure'. lol The countryside certainly reminds me of home
(Scotland), which will be nice. I can't say I'll miss the FL weather
as it's way too hot and humid for my liking but I'm loathe to give up
my work as I truly love it. However, my husband will be working up in
TN for the next couple of years so I have to move so we can be
together (kinda get the feeling of deja vu! lol)

My son seems to be coping with his father's abandonment very well. He
did a lot of talking in the early days and my husband and I did a lot
of listening. :-) He used to idolized his father, but when he finally
showed his true colors my son saw him for what he really is....a
selfish, manipulative bully with no conscience (and that's putting it
politely!). I've stopped encouraging my son to maintain contact with
his father because he rarely answered his emails and it was
heartbreaking to stand by and watch my son's disappointment when he
received no replies. It's reallly very sad that his father will never
know what a super son we have. He's truly loving and a joy to have
around.....even though he's a teenager! lol As for his father, I'm a
great believer in 'what goes around, comes around'.......and hits you
twice as hard!

Take care, Rita, and thanks again for your good wishes. If they can
understand my accent in TN then I'll be good to go! lol

Hi, oh what a shame you have moved. I did go out there for 3 months in March...my fiance has property on the north side, Duval county....Sycamore St..he has a double wide on 2 acres. Where did you live and work while you were there?
My Fiance Charles works for Anhauser Busch. I not only have to get used to living in a different country, but at the moment I live in the middle of town with everything to hand, and will be moving out to the country where everywhere you need to get to takes miles on the freeway! I did settle in quite nicely though while I was out there, and my daughter loved it at the local school in Dinsmore. The weather is one thing that I know I will have trouble getting used to, I thought Florida was hot and sunny all the time...I had no idea about the rain, and hurricane season! and the bugs!!! And having to watch out for black widows in the shop, and rattle snakes in the yard! We are so lucky in England with things like that...When I first got there I was bitten to death by mosquitos and the great big ants that cover his whole plot!....I spent a fortune on doctors bills for antibiotics, cos my bites kept getting infected! The doc did say that I would become immune to it eventually though...and It wasnt so bad running up to the time I had to leave....but it is all worth it to be with him...and I cant wait to get back to him.....we have been apart for 47 days now!, my interview for my K1 is on 17th August. Can you tell me a bit about what is was like for you over there? and if you know of any other brits in Jacksonville? Thanks, Erica

I am sorry to hear about all that buisness with your son and his father, but at least you have him there with you now!

I really wish my 21 yr old son was coming with me too...my daughter who is 7 is coming with me, but my son has a job and a girlfreind here and doesnt want to come with me. It is going to kill me to leave him behind, but he has promised to come out to me for a holiday when he can. We are also planning to return here on vacation this time next June..myself, Charles, his son and daughter who are 12 and 10, who he has custody of, and my daughter. It will be Charles first visit to England, and he has a list as long as his arm of where he wants to visit in a 2 week span!

Hi Erica,

I know it'll be a wrench for you to leave your son, but you'll only be
a plane-ride away and you'll be able to keep in touch regularly via
the phone. Not the same as seeing him every day, I know, but maybe
some compensation. In case it's any help to you, for my International
calls back home to the UK I use a company called OneSuite
(www.onesuite.com). They're like OneTel in the UK and I've found them
to be the best International rate (2.9 cents/min)and to have the best
connections. Perhaps knowing you're son is happy and content with his
life at present will help to put your mind at ease a little. And ya
never know.....maybe once he's been over here on vacation he'll change
his mind. :-)

Is your fiance/husband in the military? Just curious, as Jax is full
of military families. My husband is retired Navy and was stationed at
NAS Jax for 20 of his 21yr military career. We lived on the Westside
of Jax and just as I was getting used to driving (they're HORRIBLE
drivers in Florida!!! lol)and finding my way around, we had to up and
leave because my husband will be working up here in TN for the next
2yrs. I worked for the Florida Highway Patrol as a Regional
Communications Officer and it was a huge wrench to have to leave my
job because I truly loved it. Unfortunately, the Tennessee Highway
Patrol is too far from here for me to travel every day, so for the
time being I'm a "lady of leisure". lol

If you're going to have to deal with BCIS Jax, I always found them to
be very pleasant and helpful.

As I said before, if you've got any questions don't hesitate to ask
and I'll do my best to help in any way I can.
Meanwhile, I wish you and your daughter a safe trip and hope your move
goes smoothly.

Take care. :-)

Hi Ellie, Thanks for the info on calling the UK!

My fiance has worked for Anheusher Busch for 18 years, but was a state trooper in Jax for 11 years, and before that he was an army ranger...but he was born and raised in Jacksonville though.
Thanks again for the good wishes....Erica

I will also be changing roles when I get out there...I am going from being a working mother of one small child, to a mother of 3 and a housewife for a while. I teach dog grooming here at my local college. Eventually, I would like to set up my own dog grooming buisness....I too enjoyed my job, and the independence of my own money. It wont be easy for me...I am 39 and my fiance is 49....I am going to miss being there for my fiances 50th birthday early August too, which is a little upsetting, but will make it up to him when I see him!

Great interview post Ellie!! I checked over your list and copied it off. From reading post like yours I think John and I are ready for ours on the 2nd of August

Thanks a bunch

Thank you, Cindy, and best wishes for your interview. I'm sure
everything will go well. I truly believe organization is the key, so
you'll be just fine. :-)

Default Rete - Son's AOS (at last!!) in Memphis.

Hi Rete!
I've bumped this up to save me repeating myself. :-)
Just wanted to let you know we finally received an appt. for my son's
AOS interview - one week's notice mind you! It's on Friday, 25th March,
so we're leaving for Memphis tomorrow and staying overnight. Couldn't
have come at a better time as my husband is due to leave for Iraq soon
and will be gone for one year. Anyway, we've got all our ducks in a row
ref paperwork, except the results of his blood test and TB shot from
his medical (had to rush out and get his medical on Monday), so I know
his application will not be officially approved until these have been
submitted. However, I just wanted to ask for good vibes to be sent our
way. Please keep your fingers and toes crossed. :-) Hopefully, the AO
will consider the extenuating circumstances, which were outwith our
control, and grant approval for my son's application. Will let you know
what happens (will post here and on kamya)-may be helpful in future if
anyone finds themselves in the same cirumstances.

BTW, in case anyone is interested, we misplaced (ie lost :-) )my
husband's 2002 Tax Return and IRS were kind enough to FAX us a copy
here to the house. I wasn't aware they would do that, so thought it may
be helpful for others to know.

Hope you and your hubby are doing well. Read that you're studying
Immigration Law, which is wonderful news! Congratulations and best
wishes for succesful completion of your studies!

Yahoo, Ellie. Congratulations on the approval and for your hubby
finally being home. Now you can truly start enjoying your marital
bliss.
If you decide to become a US Citizen, please stop by the
newsgroup. And if you have the time and patience, your assistance to
newbies will always be welcomed.
And thanks for posting to Kamya. I appreciate as will others following
you using Jacksonville.

Best
regards,
Rete

Thank you so much, Rete...................we are still
awaiting my son's AOS Interview appointment to be scheduled. You may
remember that his father sent him here to vacation with me in November
2002 then promptly refused to accept our son back into his care, to
the point of refusing to collect him from the airport if he returned
to the UK! That meant my 13 yr old son violated the VWP, through no
fault of his

The school have also confirmed in writing that my
ex-husband told them
our son would be coming on vacation.
Additionallly, I have written proof from Social Work Services
confirming my son's father's refusal to accept our son back into his
care, along with written proof that he
threatened to abandon our son into the care of Social Work Services
(at the time I had no knowledge of this as my ex-husband refused to
allow me contact with our son, (although he had no legal right to do
so).
My ex-husband and I have joint custody of our son, (although the
Divorce Decree states he will reside with me and his father will have
visitation rights),
but I submitted a signed, notarized Affidavit of Consent from my
ex-husband giving his permission for our son to reside with me in the
