AOS interview
After my biometrics appointment last week, today we've had our AOS
interview at Chula Vista/San Diego. On the notice it said 9:15am and don't come earlier than 8:30. We made it there at about 9:00, signed in and had our belonging x-rayed. A very well hidden corridor leads to the AOS/EAD waiting room where we signed in again and waited for 20 minutes, after which we were called in by name- they actually go by time of appointment and not time of arrival ! The lady asked us both to hold up our hands and swear to say nothing but the truth. Seeing that we have only been married for 2 months she quickly informed us that the green card will be temporary and action on our part is required to extend it in 2 years (minus 90 days). At this point she verified my name/address/lack of criminal record/etc. Then she asked my wife about her employment and about the "history of our relationship". She was surprised that we had bought a house and lived together for the past 3 years. However, this apparently was not relevant as she stated that documentation of financial interminglement, joint checking account, etc. will only be required from the time that the temporary green card is issued and that it needs to be submitted at the end of the 2 year period. Nevertheless she asked whether we had brought any documents for her and I gave her the whole stack (joint title, mortgage loan, car ownership, checking account, vacation pics) which she put into a folder without looking at it. She did specifically ask for a pay stub of my wife (sponsor), even though this had already been mailed to INS. Finally we were told that the FBI still needs to do its background check on me and that she does not know how long it will take ("between 2 weeks and 1 year, all due to 9/11"). She stamped the relevant AOS, AP, and EAP documents and said we should probably be getting the AOS stub (which we had to sign there) in 2 weeks and AP in 3 weeks. All of the above took 5-10 minutes and we were on our way. All in all it's been a very pleasant experience- though some of the statements seem to contradict what I had read in this group earlier. |
