Default After applying I-485 questions

We just sent the I-485 form off and we arrived on a K3 Visa. A couple of
questions.

My wife will be attending school for approx 2.5 years and definately won't
be working till after that time. Do we need to fill out a work
authorization request and do we ever have to? In other words does a
greencard allow for work and/or provide a SS number? St. Louis, where we
applied shows only 4 months for I-485 processing. I guess we get an
interview after the I-485 is processed and a conditional green card soon
after that??? Just for info....We where married Jan 23, 2004 and our I-130
has already been approved.

It's not absolutely necessary, but it's highly recommended. In your wife's case, I'd do it simply to get her a SSN and a possibly a driver's license so that she'll be able to operate freely in the US.

Thanks.... but she already got her drivers license and in Missouri you don't
need a SS# for that. She will eventually be working but a few years from
now, so if she will soon get it automatically with greencard then we will
just wait. By the way you answered I'm still not sure if we can put the
thing off forever. Just trying to save some money and time. If 2 to 3
years from now we have to fill out the paperwork and spend the money for SS#
and work auth then I guess we would just do it now and have it done.

Once she gets her permenant resident card (should happen easily within 2-3 years), she'll be able to work with no other documents required (except a SSN).

Hubby and I married July 2003. We have just applied for an EAD. We don't have to, as like your wife I won't be using it for work.

We have applied as we want to get a SSN for me in order to file our tax returns. We could have used an ITIN for our tax returns but it seemed pointless when we might as well do the EAD/SSN route.

You don't have to get the EAD as the greencard allows you to work.

It just seems that so many things are easier with a SSN.
