Affidavit of Support - Questions about the sponsor
Can a sponsor withdraw their affidavit of support at any time for any reason?
I read somewhere that if the AOS sponsor is the spouse and there is a divorce, this does not cancel out the AOS.
In my case it will not be a spouse but a sibling. If the sibling decided after I had immigrated - let's say, 3 years down the line to not want to be my sponsor anymore - where would that leave me?
Also, what if the sponsor lost their job or even worse, became disabled or died... where would that leave me?
Just trying to safeguard the future!!!!
Thanks

Re: Affidavit of Support - Questions about the sponsor
Hi,
Affidavit of Support states that if a sponsored person becomes a
public charge, the US government will hold the sponsor accountable.
Say you apply for welfare, satisfy all conditions and start getting
your checks. The government will bill your sponsor for all the charges
(that's why the sponsor must keep his address updated with INS).
This obligation becomes void after you earn 40 quarters of work, or
become a citizen, or leave the US permanently, or die.
Aside from those conditions there is no way to end affidavit of
support. Your sibling can't withdraw it. Even if he dies, his estate
will be liable for all public charges you received by the time of his
death.

Hope this helps.
