I am currently going through this same procedure with my husband (he is a UK citizen, I'm American). We obtained his K-3 Visa from the American Embassy in London on April 2nd, 2002 and have only recently submitted our I-485 paperwork (We wanted to wait until the sale of our home in the UK was final). But, in doing so, I think we delayed the process in obtaining his work authorization. So, my suggestion to you would be to file as soon as possible.
