Default 1st Baby Steps

Hi Group, I have been doing so much reading the last few days it's a wonder I can see
at all. We're getting ready to file our I-129F shortly and I was wondering if there
was any advantage in consulting a lawyer. I've contacted several and found initial
consultations run from $89.00 on up to over $200.00 and if you hire one fees that
range from $800.00 to over several thousand. The instructions on the I-129F look
pretty straightforward but I wonder if there is any advantage to hiring a lawyer?
Comments? Dusty

Most (all?) non-lawyers who frequent this newsgroup agree that for cases that don't
have any "issues" having a lawyer doesn't help and in some cases can slow things down
a little by introducing an extra layer. You will find good resources to help you with
questions and often people who have attorneys come back here to ask their questions
anyway because they find it impossible to get in touch with their lawyer!

Unless you have weird circumstances I would have thought a lawyer wasn't necessary.
The forms aren't too complicated and you have a wealth of resources available on the
internet, including my own website.

If there are any special issues in either of your lives that would cause a problem with the approval of your I-129F and/or the K-1, then it best to have an attorney upfront to assist you. While the forms are straight forward and don't require you to be Einstein in order to complete them correctly, common sense, reading comprehension and a lack of intimitation, will do the trick.

But if you have potential problems with overstays, denial of entry at the POE, criminal history, etc. than having an attorney is essential, IMHO. Also an attorney will have unpublished phone numbers and contact names to help get answers quicker than it is possible for you to do.

Also check if the fee includes their assistance with the ultimate filing of the AOS after your marriage.
