Re: Is your tree up yet?
I'm on Millie's side. Brussel Sprouts, Manna from Heaven, Nectar of the Gods. Christmas Dinner would be incomplete and almost uneatable without Brussels. Christmas without Brussels would be as a day without sunshine. Such hatred of them renders you someone without a soul. Are you sure you're a dog lover?

I must admit, I'm with Millie and PC - christmas isn't christmas without sprouts! I was introduced to having them with bacon and maple syrup (perish the thought, I thought!) but indeed, they are very tasty done that way too.
Shredded, in a stir fry; steamed and served with butter (yum) ... the trick is not to overcook them!

Why do some people hate Brussels sprouts?

I am no vegetable fan, and can tolerate most if forced, but brussel sprouts, never again, if they end up on my plate (they never do since I do the cooking and won't buy or cook them) they stay on the plate.

New tree this year. We've gone energy efficient LED lights, 400 of them.
Yes I know it's counter intuitive for an Albertan.

I've never been a fan of those nasty green balls. Hubby loves them. Needless to say Christmas is the only time he has them.

Like or dislike of sprouts is all down to genetics.

What about miniJG? Like or hate? I wonder if the asparagus has similar genetic linkage with sprouts using linked genes- smelly wee in sprout lovers who must put out other noxious gases unlike us clean ones who smell clean and fresh, not like a portaloo at the end of Glastonbury

I haven't got a tree yet, and I'm starting to hope I can get away with it. If irritability and grumpiness are symptoms of one of those 'silent ' heart attacks I keep reading about then this week's snow may be to blame, but I think the shine started to wear off Christmas about four decades ago. I am approaching my half century and I am turning into the grinch. The top 5 things I still enjoy about Christmas are
1. Lights
2. Bread sauce
3. Drinking before lunch
4. Ummm....
5. Nope. That's it.
What's still good for you?

What's still good for you?
Fairy lights on anything that will stand still long enough
Kids nativity plays/Xmas lunch etc and the Christmas crafts they bring home (which I love for 5 minutes and then surreptitiously find the bin for them)
Thinking of a fantastic present that you know someone will love and then seeing their face as they open it
Pigs in blankets and the fact that you can eat a billion of them and not be judged
The smell of the turkey that fills the house when the Aga is opened for the first time on Christmas morning
Decorating the trees with Christmas music on and the smell of them
Wrapping pressies with warm mince pies and a tacky Christmas film on
The Radio Times and the annual tradition of the marker pen
Carols by candlelight in the local church on Christmas Eve (there is something about everybody singing their hearts out to the crescendo in O Come All Ye Faithful that makes my soul happy)
Mulled wine and a log fire in the local pub after the aforementioned church service
The Queen's speech
Bread sauce (obviously)
Hunting for mistletoe in the woods with the dogs
Sprouts with pancetta and chestnuts (the only time we eat them throughout the year, but somehow at Christmas they're obligatory and acceptable if cooked that way)
Stir up Sunday
How satsumas and clementines taste a million times better at Christmas
Port and stilton (again, the only time I ever have it)
Making the cranberry sauce with the kids and the whole house smelling like Christmas
Laughing at hubby trying to put Christmas lights up outside
The excitement on the kids faces on Christmas Eve as we go through the usual traditions (stockings out, mince pies for Father Christmas and a carrot for Rudolph, reading The Night Before Christmas together)
Watching the hunt set off on Boxing Day followed by a good walk with the dogs
The annual tradition of the Met Office giving us odds of a White Christmas, and everybody hoping despite the fact that it's not happened in forever (and not really caring, because we always go skiing just after Christmas so know we'll get snow)
Cold turkey sandwiches with fresh homemade bread, my mother's mayonnaise, and black pepper
A house full of people I love
Log fires (we have three, and Christmas is about the only time we ever light two of them, the dining room isn't used the rest of the year!)
The kids looking forward to opening their advent calendars every morning (no, not chocolate ones, just traditional pictures)
Our annual Christmas theatre/ice skating/seeing the lights trip to London
A proper break from work
Making a gingerbread house with the children (and then throwing it away in January because nobody ever eats it)
And probably about a million more things. Yep, I bloody love Christmas.

Despite being a complete grump I love this. You are definitely well named. It's like Christmas in The Archers (the only other place I've ever heard Stir up Sunday mentioned)! Have a lovely time.

Ah, I am degrumping you and spreading a little festive cheer! Fantastic. My work here is done.

Re: Is your tree up yet?
Surely the answer to the Brussels Sprouts issue is just to get the non-EU variety.
Just buy North American fairy cabbages instead.

Interesting- I'm glad that I have the correct gene
Nice tree
Sadly doesn't work
