If the wood stove is operating efficiently and proper fuel is used, it's less polluting than oil (perhaps not better than gas). It still remains carbon neutral though, whereas oil, coal & gas aren't. Most of that stuff in your link concerns open wood fires.

Electricity of course is point-of-use non polluting. But overall it rather depends on how the electricity was generated.

Strongly suggest you purchase a cast iron woodstove--it will retain the heat and let the heat out very slowly. If you but a steel woodstove it will be considerably cooler

If you really want efficiency from a wood burner you should look at the German/Austrian (perhaps Swiss too) Kachelofen...

Available in Canada from here.. http://www.canadiankachelofen.com/

wow, thanks all. Even having skimmed over the reviews (and this is how dumb I am) I totally didn't realise you needed to plug a pellet stove in.

I thought you just shovelled in the pellets in a similar way to shoving logs in there

I think on that basis alone its good enought to steer towards the wood burner.

Snap...I didn't know you had to plug them in either. Your post led my fingers to do a wander around Canadian wood stoves...bloody hell they are pricey! My exact kitchen wood stove is in C Tire for over 1,300 dollars (sorry can't find the dollar sign on the keyboard). I am in shock.

Have a look at Opal. I have one, an Opal 2 if I remember correctly, in my basement and it burns very efficiently. It will heat my whole house up to 24C by itself even on the coldest winter days. My winter house sitter loves it !

Default Re: Wood burner or pellet stove?

we have a wood stove here in Canada (a pacific energy one) and had one in Scotland (a morso squirrel i think it was called).

if you can, the morso squirrel is a fantastic stove. the pacific energy stove we have is a lot bigger, but just doesn't burn as well as the morso.

have never had a pellet stove, so can't comment, but wood stoves are fantastic - you just have to climb over dogs lying in front of them to fill them up!
