Winter 21-22

As we're now in November, it feels as if there should be a new thread.

Today, blue sky, sunshine 6c - a change from all the wet weather we had for the previous 2 weeks... seems to be warmer weather as the week goes on (which is good for the veg that remain in my garden)

Please no white stuff until after November 17 as I'm driving to and from the airport (Edmonton) And flying to Toronto to visit my daughter. I cannot wait but am nervous about the Hwy and blizzards.

There's a dusting, not a blizzard. I expect to use the BMW on all seasons for a few more weeks.

I'm more concerned about driving Hwy 2, it can be a complete ice rink in places. Winter tires are on.

Two more weeks isn't too much to ask, there's even time for it to snow and get nice again.
At least you have a few good highway cams along the way (like these ,https://511.alberta.ca/cctv?start=0&...earch=%20leduc) through LA and the other major centres so if you see cars in the ditch and tow trucks working you'll know.

I don't know if it was officially a tornado, but still crazy weather.

If it turns out it was officially a tornado, they are quite rare in Vancouver area.

"the City of Vancouver has only seen three tornadoes in recorded history (F1 in 1956, F0 in 1962, F0 in 1976), with twisters also occurring in nearby communities New Westminster (F1 in 1954), Steveston (F1 in 1964), Port Moody (F0 in 1988) and Pitt Meadows (F0 in 1991)"

Apart from a couple of days Calgary has been dry and sunny since we arrived 2 months ago. Daytime temps last week varied from 6c to 17c. This week getting colder with a high of 8c but over night below freezing. No snow on the ground yet. I have a feeling temps are going to drop dramatically come the end of the month! Having the winter tyres fitted next week.

Yesterday I rode outside in the sun without gloves, I became warm and had to cast aside my sweatshirt. Winter in Canada is always grim but, if that's the worst of it this time around, I can cope.

Environment Canada confirmed it was indeed a Tornado on Saturday.

""On the evening of Saturday, Nov. 6, a tornado moved through UBC."

Winds of 80 to 110 km/h. EF0 at those wind speeds.

It has been a nice dry day for once. Just spent the last hour watching a tug boat unsuccessfully refloat a barge that ran aground in the last storm. I think they’re going try again tomorrow at high tide. Tune in for the show.

I think winter is over for us.
It hasn't snowed for weeks and the temperature has been hovering between -1 & +3 which is nice.

12c today in Calgary. Two weeks of minus 10-25c over Xmas and NY then plenty of days well above 0 this past few weeks. All the snow has gone. No doubt we will have another freezing spell before long.

Though we were never 'completely trapped' like the subject of the video, when I arrived in Canada we had several winters in the late 60s and early 70s where accumulated snowpack up to the eaves of the house just seemed normal to my sister and me as kids. We built extensive networks of snow tunnels in the front yard each winter, complete with pop-up 'fortresses' from which we threw snowballs at each other, and assorted friends.

Our parents worried that the tunnels might fall in on us, but in the springtime they grew damp and unpleasant to play in long before they actually collapsed.

Great fun while it lasted!! I doubt I'll ever see winters like that again.

Re: Winter 21-22

My final winter in Winnipeg was rough (famous last words).

In Winnipeg we generally find that winter can be mild (0 to -20) with lots of snow. Or it can be sunny and cold (-20 to -40). This year unfortunately we got both the cold and the snow. We don't get huge snow falls as there's not a lot of moisture in the air. In fact the biggest snowfall I've seen in 15 years here was probably a 6"-12" storm. This winter has been around -20 with wicked wind chills since December and in that time we've seen snow storm after snow storm. There's no where left to put the snow. I'm glad it's starting to warm up but the forecast still isn't that great, we are seeing nasty winds with temperatures fluctuating between -5 to -15 for the foreseeable future.

The end of 2021-2022 winter can not come soon enough! It's a good year to be quitting lol.
