Yesterday was a pain in the arse. We packed the car for the 450km trip home, only to find that it wouldn't start. The Boy jumpstarted it and we set out for 450km of blowing snow and black ice (even people around Montreal were driving slowly). We only turned off the engine for long enough to gas-up or have a wazz. All that in a -41 windchill.
On the bright side, we got home to find that two-weeks of snow had disappeared from our driveway. Can it really hit zero tomorrow? |

I've been through that area a few times for work as I've had to be in Cornwall, Ontario and Huntingdon Quebec in the same day and I've cut through northern New York State (full tank of gas later....:):). If cheap no name smokes are your thing that area in New York state is the place to go as well. The people at the Canadian border building asked me how long I'd been in the USA and when I answered 'less than half an hour', their reply was 'and a full tank of gas I assume'. The road on the west side of the river doesn't have any border building but the Canadian border people can view it across the river and it is a dead end road just leading to some cottages and the native reserve. St Regis, QC to the west is another isolated place only accessible via the USA. The street view link on my phone wouldn't snap up to the map. Hi much cheaper is the US gas? |

The street view link on my phone wouldn't snap up to the map. Hi much cheaper is the US gas? In Cornwall, Ontario most are $1.07 CDN per litre now Many people who go to the casino in Akwesasne fill up. Other than cheap gas and cheap smokes there isn't a lot of economic activity in the area. |

Currently gas is 1.35 to 1.40 per liter in Vancouver area including Surrey (using gas buddy) and 0.93 per liter just across the border. Suppose if you have a large gas tank, and are close to the border, there is some savings to be had to make it worthwhile. Even with our small gas tank in the Mazda 2, it would be $15 or so dollars cheaper to fill in the US, but we live too far from the border to make it worthwhile. Not huge savings, but a dollar saved is a dollar one can use for other things. |

We drove through Montreal over the weekend on the way back from Quebec. We passed a gas station that was selling gas for 15 cents more than the one where we'd filled up 30 minutes earlier. The odd thing was that the Montreal gas station was right next to the bloody refinery where the gas came from.

Nice and warm today, -7 on the car hotness thingy. Lots of snow though and, unusually, the street hadn't been ploughed. The drive was quite challenging.

It rained quite a bit yesterday and last night, and the temp dropped from -5 last night to -17 currently. The news is showing clips of people skating on streets and parking lots, and it looks really shiny out there. I may just strap on my cleats and walk to work today.

Yeah, I was surprised to find frozen rain on my car last night. But it didn't seem to cause any problems on the roads.

Seems when rest of Canada has a crazy winter, Vancouver is mild.

It looks like we'll be getting a January thaw over the next three or four days.
This seems earlier than usual to me. Together with all those colder than -30 days we already had, which I'm sure were also early, perhaps the end of winter will also arrive early. :fingerscrossed: |
