Canadian wine. Specifically Sawmill Creek.

In a box.

There are so many things about this that put me off. But $38 for a 4L box and some on line reviews that actually suggest it's not bad for $9 a bottle The Merlot anyway.

I've only found one Canadian wine that's decent and that was a Jackson Triggs Rosé.

Any opinions?

Probably fine in a stew or chilli but I wouldn't risk using it for something like a boeuf bourguignon where the flavour of the wine is prominent.

We quite like most of the Sandbanks winery offerings. There are probably better international wines for the same money, but its supporting our local economy.

Erindoors is also a fan of the Sawmill Creek Autumn Blush Rose FWIW.

Isn't closer to $7 a bottle? That's what I keep telling myself....well at least it's cheap...:fingerscrossed:

I was a little loose with my words. That price is a "one day only" for Wednesday this week in NB - although I see it's the normal price in Ontario. The $9 price was in a review of the wine.

I buy other cheap ones now before Sawmill Creek like the Peller Estates or Copper Moon, various others. I've never bought wine in a box - not a snob but it just doesn't seem right to me.
Sawmill Creek & Jackson Triggs come out of the same winery but they aren't the same wine.

Wine is so expensive here. You can get a fairly decent 5L box of red wine for about $16 in Washington.

best thing about wine boxes is being able to convince myself that 3 glasses is 'half a bottle' whatever the size of the glass. No need for a 12 step program. Absolutely none. :thumbup:

I only have one glass a night.

I do fill it up a few times it must be said.

Yes, unfortunately avoid anything that's under approx $18-19 per bottle unless it has been imported. That's only just over 10 quid in real money.

Also watch the ones that are 'made in Canada from imported grapes' or even just 'Bottled in Canada' - those are best avoided in my opinion.

Mission Creek and Quails Gate do some nice ones (although our dog did used to wee in one of Quails Gate's vineyards...), otherwise go for wines with a BC VQA label.

Can't speak for red wine, because I just need to look at the label and it gives me a headache....


Bear in mind when reading my advice, that my favourite glugging wine is Cordoniu Cava...fortunately available here and $14.99 in BC Liquor Stores!

Jackson Triggs from what I've seen tend to do this for a number of their wines, in the LCBO they're actually in their own section usually.

I'd also recommend a different Mission... Mission Hill from the Okanagan, I'm slightly biased on that front though :cool:

There is nothing wrong with wine in a box. I am admittedly talking about everyday wine.

The whole purpose of wine containers is to be non-reactive and keep the air out (or wine turns to vinegar).

Corks were used because they were the only thing available at the time. They are still good, provided they are kept damp (ie bottle on the side). Screw tops and plastic corks are just as good, probably better, at keeping air out.

Plastic-lined boxes with non-return valves are a good way of keeping wine.

If you are very nice to me, I'll tell you how to spot a dodgy bottle of Bordeaux.

Still, the "long and pleasurable finish" sounds like it might be worth the price of admission....
