Re: Why 'community' mailboxes?
The biggest problem with these community mail boxes is that it's quite easy for the local pikeys to steal everything from them.

Re: Why 'community' mailboxes?
True...but there are "Pikers" (American equivalent), which of course in OZ means something completely different

I've seen people drive to their rural mail box, on their own property. Taking the yappy dog with them.

Re: Why 'community' mailboxes?
Small towns always had a bank of mailboxes in the front of the postmistress' or postmaster's house, and people would go there to collect their mail. When they built the superbox in the town where I get some of my mail, the service had been relocated to the general store, so the boxes were removed from there but if you get a parcel or registered letter you go into the store to sign for and receive it. I've never heard of anyone breaking into superboxes to steal mail - the unlocked mailboxes on peoples houses are much more convenient targets. Everyone knows the man drives up with the mail between 9:30 and 10:00 so they come up from the surrounding resort villages to get their mail after 10. So for us, (unless you want to send a parcel and have to buy the postage, having the superbox is actually more convenient than the old system when we had to go into the old lady's house.

Re: Why 'community' mailboxes?
We live in the boonies...
We collect our mail from the local post office a couple of km away from home. She's only there between 7.30am and 2.30pm so it can be a struggle but hey our mail is safe... She has a system a bit like hotels have for messages and just has a little look when you walk in to see whether there is any mail for us. I like it as we get to talk about the weather everyday!!! |
