Why Canada is different.

Hi All
Just wanted to share this with you, I work for a company that supplies and services dishwashers, as well as the chemical that go in them, anyway I had a call for a hospital in the Hamilton area, the machine was down and it was late in they day, so I picked the replacement part up from our office, swing by and fit it and get them running, and I still get home at a reasonable time, next thing I get copied in on a voice message from the supervisor at the hospital saying what a great job I'd done and how they have time to spare before the machine is needed and what a good chap I was, well this gets forwarded to all the management, who all reply thanking me for doing my job.
All I'm saying is this wouldn't have happened back in the UK, the attitude was " it's your job ".
So I guess all I'm saying is " Well done Canada for having nice people in the work place "

Hi magnumpi
Yer I know it happens in the Uk, But it seems to happen a lot easily over here, and the stark reality of it is, it doesn't cost much ( time or money ) to thank someone, and the benefits in productivity are untold, back in the UK I used to beleive the old adage " your only as good as your last cock up " but since living over here I see things differently.

Canadians are a very complimentary lot on the whole, (good with their pleases and tq's and such like).

So I suppose as a hardworking Brit giving good customer service they are totally blown away (see previous threads about crappy customer service!).

I like that Canadians butter you up with niceties - even if 90% of it is just lip service

You also get the companies that treat you like sh1t and don't know how to say thank you or how to treat their staff, y'know the ones that take you for granted and favour other members of staff, it's not all shiney happy here.

It used happen a lot in the UK when I worked there. Loads of times we got good bonuses for doing good job, actual cash in my hand so I can give my young family some special things that we otherwise couldn't afford. You wouldn't get that in Canada where the attitude is, "you get paid for it, so what?" All I wanted to say was thanks UK for actually recognizing good work with a proper reward, not the syrupy superficial bollocks you get over here.

Peter.

The company I work for in the UK harps on about reward and recognition and how important it is  .....

..... but we are underpaid and never get any thanks

I've deleted most of this post as it wouldn't be good if my employers read it. Note to self - Next time I join a forum, use an assumed name and I can bitch all I want :)

Later

Yes, it really depends on the company. My company used to heap this false praise on everyone when they were doing well and everyone was happy, but, as soon as things started to go pear-shaped, the knives really came out.

Can see where you are coming from must be a Canadian phenomenon; that would never happen in Blighty or anywhere else....;)

I put it down to messing with the weetabix formula...

In Canada people do half a job most of the time- so when some one turns up who actually does a full job it pays to be grateful or next time you get half the job.

I blame the tipping culture.

Last year, in a conference call with a client, the CEO thanked me profusely for all my help.

I felt bound to point out that thanks were not necessary. Not when he was paying me $2,500 a day.

It went a bit quiet after that.

I've seen pictures of, ahem, professionals who can charge that sort of coin for a day, or perhaps a night. They look rather different to you. Still to each his own eh?;)
