Re: What happened to the Maple Leaf...
I don't want to loose BE...I'm not sure I would have ever got to Canada semi-sane without it. I did however used to feel an ease about opening a 'worldview opinion general thread' that I would now hesitate to open because people just don't. But we did before. The responses wern't rude - but funny...I get enough general put downs here from blinkered silly, twerps in daily life here - I don't need more of the same on here...
The general Canada enquires however seem to be much less joy filled, much less joie de vivre and much more nose to the grindstone...which is probably just a remark on the sad state of the world and those in it.
We could 'try' to bring back fun...I'm up for it...I have six months summer renaissance before I'm packed away again for the winter...I'll guatantee three happy non whingefilled posts till September if anyone else will?

Aren't most of the additional posts complaints about the difficulty of posting?
What's interesting to me about this is that I would have expected that, as web software became more of a commodity and most discussion sites moved to the same few pieces of software, what would differentiate successful sites from failures would be the content; the idea behind them. This site tends to disprove that "Brits abroad grumbling about the weather" ought to be a winning mechanism to draw a crowd regardless of the technology but it seems that, if the implementation is bad enough, you can chase the users away regardless of the content.

I think it's about active member size () if there are too many posts (like on Reddit) discussions tend to fire up and down very quickly. With a right sized group, posters tend to know each other, and discussions can ramble on for weeks. You've said that you were (or are) active on the Guardian forum, I wonder how that compares in group size to BE. On the odd occasion that I used to post on there, it did seem fairly anonymous. The risk with clunky forum software, bans, etc is that the group loses critical mass and fades away. Or moves to a better platform.

It does not help when you look at the first 10 posts on "The Maple Leaf" and its all doom and gloom.

Pull the other one, it's got bells on! You are a little tinker Oink
You would find that you wouldn't be able to post at all - or even log in - if you had been banned - which clearly you aren't nor have ever been! I've looked at the list and checked it twice!

I suspect UltraRunner has revived his fortunes and hear he now runs an ICO company from a private island off the Caymans. His days are spent entertaining the rich and powerful and at distance he's seen, photographed by paparazzi, surrounded by Hooters girls. This forum long gone from his mind.
Lucky bugger!
Hope lies in the proles!
Oink is a symbol of the oppressed on this forum. A ban might tip the balance. Like when Vader strikes down OB1.

Genuinely!
How is everything with you anyway?
Have you made it to France now or are you still in Newcastle?

Re: What happened to the Maple Leaf...
I've never been able to use BE on the phone - as soon as you try to load any of the pages, ads have always just jumped up and taken over demanding downloads, and buzzing incessantly. This wasn't a 'slightly annoying' thing, I've literally never been able to use it. Tried once every few months and was simply unable to read a single page as I tried to wrest control of my phone back. It was like visiting a porn site in the late 90s.
