lol there's quite a few with York in it...Yorkdale (there's a good mall there) Yorkville...WISH I lived there...York Mills (no idea) there's also York region which is an area North East (don't quote me) of Toronto...lots of nice places there like Richmond Hill.
I would have a quick check into house prices in the area you're looking at (they're not tanking so much as in the UK yet) and see if you can get a few quotes for car insurance. My other half works in real estate on the legal side so if you had an idea of what you want to spend on buying I could ask him to average up the cost of buying legal fees etc and what you could expect to pay monthly. He's good at that stuff ;-) Couple of questions for you other half .... we are looking to buy something in the region of $800 - $900K, with a deposit of about $200K. How much would we need to earn salary-wise to achieve that? Is it worked out on 3x salary or can you get more? Also, do estate agents hold details of new build houses? Thanks! |

Cost of living is vastly different in Canada compared to the UK. It costs me £60 to fill my car up with petrol, average weekly supermarket bills are £100 and don't get me started on the gas & electric prices over here.....
Oh dear ... I must be in rant/rave mode today - sorry! As for gas and electric, I pay $60 to Hydro one in distribution/ debt retirement etc before I use a single kWh, and my monthly oil payment over the year to keep the house warm in a climate where its -10 to -25 outside for three months is $240 a month (down from $300 when heating oil was $1.35 per liter in the summer) Compare the cost of groceries some time, chicken a $7/ lb, milk at ~$1/ liter, fresh fruit and veg costs in the winter etc etc. I tell you, its pretty close to a wash. |

Oh dear ... I must be in rant/rave mode today - sorry! I get what you mean, you just want to know what YOUR bottom line is for living expenses. I.e what do you need to make here in order to be comfortable and have the standard of living you had in the uk (or better). |

It's based on debt ratios not multiplier of salary but, suppose you borrow $700,000 at today's low rates, that would be a bit over $5,000 a month in repayments and would require an income of about $200,000 and no other debts. This would lead to disaster when the rates next go up. |

On the other hand you have to drive twice as far to get anywhere you want to go, and your insurance is twice as much.

Thanks! edit: you don't need to spend quite that much BTW to get a decent house in Toronto, unless of course the York you're thinking of is Yorkville. |

I think you're kidding yourself. I think you need about the same amount of income for the same standard of living. Even if it's 10% cheaper in Canada that 100,000 pounds needs to be 180,000 dollars, an amount you're much less likely to be able to get than the 100,000 pounds. If you move to the middle of nowhere from a city you win but city to city, not really.
If for instance I earned £100K here, what would I have to earn in Canada to have the same lifestyle? |

Just buy a filter machine and make your own double strength coffee and buy some pillsbury cin-a-bun packs. (Do they have them in the UK?)

What does he think it would cost to maintain your lifestyle? He knows what it is a lot better than us, weve just met you and you havent told us anything! Houses in toronto are from $400 000 to $40 000 000 SUVs are $25k to $125k I personally wouldnt set foot in the GTA for less than $100k minimum a year, and even then I would have doubts. Others get by on $30k a year. Its no good wishing to be paid $200k a year based on a UK salary conversion if no one in that business here gets more that $120k See my point? What are they offering him, then maybe we could tell you what that might get you here. |
