I've already read about cheese and Bisto, but what else do you bring back with you?

None. I've not been back to the UK. Plenty of alternative options to enjoy here.

Default Re: What food items do you bring back from the UK to Canada?

I don't bring anything back for my self. Can't be bothered, running round getting the stuff, plus the extra weight, I can get stuff in the British shop if I need it. Would rather use my weight allowance for buying new clothes

This stuff.

http://www.belazu.com/shop/buy/rose-harissa-paste.html

You used to be able to get it at meinhardt on Granville for $$$, but they eventually stopped stocking it. Not seen anything like it anywhere else.

Not been back either...but if I had, I'd be returning with a selection of Colman's Casserole mixes. (for cooking as opposed to simmer and pour)

Some Cumberland sausage would be nice too. Oh...and some frozen faggots.

Now if someone can advise me of acceptable alternatives (as I have found for other things) I'm all ears. Or eyes.

I've never used Colman's mixes but they are in all the British shops around here.

How about this recipe for sausages? http://www.godine.co.uk/blog/sausage-recipe. I make sage and onion 'sausages' I don't bother with the casings but make them into meatball shapes.

Malt loaf and Minstrels!

After 5 years, that's all I bring back now. The first suitcase was an embarrassment.

No 'Brit' shops here although Superstore and Bulk Barn have a few things. I do order them occasionally, but only when the rest of an order justifies the minimum delivery costs and that's usually at xmas.

Thanks for the suggestion but that's why I like the Colman mixes. I don't have to get all the herbs and spices in the recipes that will sit around in the cupboards and never get used again.

Now if you could buy them ready mixed - a la Colman's - that would be worth it.

But that making them into different shapes idea is a good one and food for thought

It sounds daft, but have you tried sausage meat and just adding a few things before cooking? Or is it cheating?

I can't have gluten so have to cook from scratch but I have no problem with cheating. I would do that if the sausage meat didn't have rusk in it. I just use minced pork and add stuff. Easy peasy. Make pattie shapes so you can have sausage burgers.

Next time I see chicken chasseur I will get some for you

Now this intrigues me. I sort-of get (but can't bring myself to do) the Bisto thing, if for some reason you can't make proper gravy. But stuffing mix? Packet bread sauce mix? Good God, how hard is it to make stuffing or bread sauce?

I know I like to cook while others don't, and it might come across as a bit foodie-snobbish, but I genuinely don't understand why you'd bother making something from a packet that is so simple, quick and cheap to do from scratch.

And deodorant? Really? Oh well, each to their own, I suppose.

Not been back since I moved here yet, but last time my family visited I got them to bring two squeezy Branston Pickle bottles and several tesco vegetable gravy granules. There's nothing really else I miss. You can buy PAXO stuffing at Walmart that tastes just the same to me as the UK stuff, and for Squash you can get the packets of lipton juice crystals which again tastes exactly the same as fruit squash when mixed in a pitcher.
