Default What is the best leaving gift

One of my work mates is emigrating to vancouver soon. He's into IT but has most of the usual gadgets.

We've collected a few hundred quid and are not sure what to give him. Some say give him the cash, but others say that if we did that we would be very boring.

What would you prefer? And do you ave any good ideas for gifts?

What might someone moving to vancouver find useful which is not too difficult to carry.

Thanks in advance for any sugestions.

Have a couple of ideas. Does he have a favourite artist, if so get him a limited edition print. That's what I got and brought it over in a tube. I chose a local artist. I also got some quirky things too.

A good idea which doesn't cost much is for all you workmates to get together for a photo, get it enlarged and sign personal messages on the back. My OH got presented with a frame photo of him sleeping at his desk . He has told everyone that it was his nightshift lunchbreak

You could always ask him. My workmates asked me.

When I left I asked for and received a suitcase. It made lots of sense. My leaving day was after our container had been packed, and I needed a suitcase.

We tend to buy iPods for leavers here, any left over money we buy lottery tickets with and secretly hope that they do not win the jackpot, gutted or what!

Something to remind him of the old country.

An umberella is a good idea

Kind of a reminder of where he came from and a warning about where he's going.

Not being funny, but if the customs people want to get picky, anything you buy for him he'll supposed to pay tax on when he arrives in Canada due to it being newer than six months (i.e. not used). Don't know how likely it is that it'll happen, but it's supposed to.

What about going on line and getting him gift card for The Bay, then he can spend it on something he needs once he gets there??

Or if he's an outdoorsy-type (presumably he is), then this is an option:

although I'd be wary about getting anything actually delivered from Canada to the UK to give to him as you may get hit by customs/import duties.

My work colleagues changed up the money and handed me an envelope of Canadian dollars - which I thought was a nice touch.

Damn - more shopping !

Well i had my leaving lunch today and got a real surprise. My gift was a brand new Laptop Computer and a carry case to suit.

Bloody briliant, beats an umbrella hands down.

Wow, I don't know if congratulations is the right word but you knows what I means.

You are obviously very well thought of.

Cheers
