Default 'whale killed trainer' - so easy to think of as tame

Well I admit, a v tenuous link to anything Canadian, but I was just surprised to see it...so easy to think of them as 'tame'.

A killer whale attacked and killed a trainer at the SeaWorld amusement park in Florida today as horrified tourists looked on.

This is not such a tenuous link to Canada as you think.

This same whale was involved in a trainers death in Victoria B.C. in 1991.

A very sad thing to happen..

However, I do not think that animals like Killer whales should not be kept in conditions like that or used for shows.

Mind you though I am not a fan of any animals being used in shows for our entertainment.

Hi Steve

I'd spotted that bit - will read the cbc link too. I didn't know Victoria had whales in captivity (may be no more) - been to Vancouver Aq though.

And my sister thinks I'm risk averse when I say I'm happy to watch from the boats, but less confident from a canoe (ok, in Canadian - Kayak).

So easy to think their beauty means a placid, gentle demeanor.

Went bear watching up the BC coast a couple of yrs back & I was falling into the same mind set, after hours of watching them just munching happily, swimming, turning rocks etc - so easy to forget they might not always be that placid.

Bali.

Something I struggle with a little too, but on the flip side, I know if we never saw them up close, how do we stress the importance of them.

One of my fave places in the UK is Gweek seal sanctuary - a lot of rescued seals in there - few permanent, but still a tourist attraction & a side bar of entertainment.

Not quite as black & white for me, but not comfortable either.

And a third instance according to CBCTV. They have a serial killer Killer Whale on their hands and claim the latest victim was to blame for losing her footing.

It's truly astonishing what some people will do to make a buck.

I thought that was an ironic name. A bit like calling a short person lofty.

The name "killer whale" derives from the Spanish "ballena asesina" ("killer whale" in English), evidently coming from sailors who observed them, the Orcas, hunting whales.

So sayeth Wikepedia.

There are numerous instances of so called tame animals killing or maiming their keepers. I suspect humans dealing with them become complacent or lose respect for the animals' inherent wildness.

Indeed, one day those gerbils will rise up and mankind will be sorry.

I saw the Super Dogs at the PNE last year and they were great and also I saw the Moscow State Circus when Russia was still a communist country and they had performing bears which were brilliant.

At the crocodile farm near bangkok they have a show involving monkeys wearing make up and wielding knives. I can't remember exactly what went on, other than it was freaky and the monkeys didn't look very pleased to be wearing bright red lip stick.

You could also buy lumps of meat attached to a bit of string on the end of a stick which you could then use to 'fish' for crocodiles. I remember spending some time taunting one of them by dangling quarter of a chicken tantalizingly close and then snatching it away just when it had decided to make a grab. All in all - it was a fun day out for all the family.

Yea - I love all the headlines that are popping up all over the place......

....... such as Sky News: "Whale Drowns Trainer".

That's it - blame the whale. Take it out of the world's oceans and put it in a tank the size of half a football pitch, then............

I still do not believe in animals being used for entertainment but I do agree that it is good to get the opportunity to get close to the animals. It just needs to be done in a way that is respectful to the animals and not getting them to leap through hoops for our entertainment.

Eek. I am glad that I have not seen anything like this.
