Weird Holiday Decorations!
I've noticed some "odd" Christmas decorations and Holiday paraphernalia available here, perhaps you would care to add to the list
Illuminated palm trees Those nutcrackers especially the giant one, I find them slightly sinister looking and do they actually crack nuts? The angels for the top of the tree are enormous and look like those hideous dressed dolls you can buy in Argos. Bits of leylandii conifers stuck in pots Eggnog, hands up who likes it, I've not yet mustered up the courage to try it. That said, I admit we have a plastic Timbit snowman thingy taking pride of place on our tree!! PS I'm not knocking Canada, or trying to make anyone jealous, just thought we needed to get a light hearted thread going ;) |
Re: Weird Holiday Decorations!
Those Timbit snowman ornaments are hot property in our office right now. :D

Re: Weird Holiday Decorations!

Only way i can drink eggnog is in coffee. It's too sickly otherwise.

Re: Weird Holiday Decorations!
I've yet to sample the delights of egg nog - it seems a little scary, it's in a milk carton:eek: Maybe I should make some when we're back in the UK and force the rellies to try it with me:rofl:
Oh and yes there are some really weird deccies too. I remember people in the UK decorating their outsides and a lot of them that went beyond just lights would have some sort of theme going, whether it be just a couple of colours or as much as a train going around an erupting volcano type thing - well just down the road they have gone mad and every year they add a little to the madness. We have the Grinch going up and down a ladder stealing Santa's sack - nothing wrong with that, we also have the nativity - nothing wrong with that, we also have frosty and family blow ups - nothing wrong with that, then we have the multi coloured lights in the trees, the individual light up animals, the multi coloured light up animals, the flashing snowflakes, the candy canes. Individually these things could look quite tasteful, when they're altogether in one front garden it's a bit much. lol. Has anyone heard of hiding a pickle in a tree? |

Our decs are pretty normal - we have an 8 ft santa in his sleigh being pulled by 6 reindeer (each 4ft long) along the front fence of the garden. Can't put up any decs on the ground outside the house - thinkk pretty white lighted deer, moose, horse drawn carriages, lamps etc - because the dog thinks they are dinner. (Learnt the lesson after 16 candy canes were chewed up overnight last year. |

Yeah that's right - I found out the tradition when I was working in a gift store last Christmas. I asked my husband if he had heard the tradition - he had no idea and seeing as his Mum was German and therefore most of his rellies are German, he had never ever heard of it.

Re: Weird Holiday Decorations!
My mother used to make eggnog way back in the 50's in the UK - it's not anything new, however, her's always had alcohol in it.
http://historicalfoods.com/egg-nog-recipe If you put lemonade with it, it's called a snowball! :) Edit: Personally, I prefer mulled wine :) |

Re: Weird Holiday Decorations!
I purchased a carton of Eggnog, we sampled it for the first and last time yesterday evening. It had the consistency of a yellowish Baileys and looked like it would be a yummy sort of custardy type thing.
I am very sorry and don't wish to offend but it was vile and tasted like....I won't even go there at this early hour of the morning. I doubt the addition of alcohol would improve it. Needless to say it went straight into the sink:rofl: I wonder if homemade would be any better????? |

The stuff I had was homemade and was really very good. ( I don't like bailys' or that sort of consistency, this stuff was nothing like that at all).
Slightly off topic on the thread I started but on the food theme has anyone seen any ready rolled icing here??? |

I have just found a recipe for eggnog that cooks the yolks and doesn't add uncooked egg whites at the end. Sounds ok and has rum in it so will give it a whirl:fingerscrossed:

Michaels have it in their baking section - afaik they have the ready rolled stuff and also the blocks of stuff that you roll out yourself.
I think everyone sticks that Betty Crocker frosting stuff on anything and everything;) |

Thanks, may have time to pop down to Calgary. Can't understand why they don't have it in the baking sections at any grocery stores. Our local Walmart, which has a huge selection of wedding/birthday cake tins etc don't stock.
I think everyone sticks that Betty Crocker frosting stuff on anything and everything;) If I am correct and you are in Airdrie, the closest Michaels to you will be in County Hills Village - near the superstore.... (take a right onto Country Hills boulevard as you go down deerfoot, then a right onto harvest hills boulevard. Go right again at the lights when you see Superstore... go straight on at the next set of lights and turn left at the following set into the carpark...) Their baking section is on the front far right hand side as you go into the store. |
