The Very Best Canadian Songwriter/Artist Ever !
Has to be Gordon Lightfoot, born in Orillia ON......
Best tune the circle is small amongst many others but his most prolific has to be Canadian Railroad Trilogy..
Anyone else enjoy his music ?

I guess you don't live in Canada. If you did you would be throughly sick of all cancon.

Dirge like Nickelback, Celine, Loverboy, Trooper, Triumph, Rush, Max Webster, Kim Mitchell, April Wine, Bryan Adams, the Tragically Tragic are living proof that CanCon is a ugly monster.

In terms of CanCon I'm a big fan of Laughin' Lennie Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Cowboy Junkies, and bits of the Rankin Family, Bruce Cockburn and Stompin' Tom (requires alchohol to fully enjoy).

IMO they are a great band, its just a shame the same few tracks are played on the radio all the time.
I still say Neil Young has to trump Lightfoot. Look at who he has worked with, and the vareity of styles hes used, from acoustic stuff like harvest, to "this one goes to 11" rock like Weld, to blues, and grunge and more, Plus the number of standout classic songs hes produced, plus the sheer volume of good standard work. Plus the fact he doesnt get overplayed under CanCon for some reason.
Its just a damned shame he cant sing better, but maybe thats half the charm?

Of those listed so far I've only paid money for Leonard Cohen's work. I did also buy a Rough Trade album at a garage sale but it came in a crate with something I actually wanted.

I went to see Leonard Cohen in Vienna a few week ago, it was a great show it's hard to believe the man is 74.

He certainly needs your ticket dollars, he's lived like he was in one of his songs. I think currently I am best able to put up with Nelly Furtado. A Simple Plan and OLP get right on my tits.

Re: The Very Best Canadian Songwriter/Artist Ever !
After 4 years of enforced listening to fiddle music here on the Rock I have developed an immunity to if not a grudging respect for one 'Stan Rogers' who sadly died in a plane crash in the 90's. Somewhat of an East Coast folk hero.
Aside from that I can live with Great Big Sea but thats about it for the list. A particularly nasty piece of hell should be reserved for the dirglike moanings of Nickelback et al.

Personally, I can't stand listening to 'classic rock' radio...it is so repetitive and regressive. The station here in Ottawa, CHEZ 106.1 is stuck in a Supertramp/Max Webster/Eagles/Zeppelin/Stones/AC/DC timewarp that basically plays the same 5-10 songs per day of the said artists. Its very popular with the male/white high tech crowd.
Q107 when I lived in Toronto was very similar.

I'm still of the same opinion re: Guess Who, but you are right they do play the same songs over and over again on the radio...No Sugar Tonight, American Woman repeat....

Jeez, you think. I wonder, why would a CLASSIC ROCK station play those old classic rock tunes all the time?
There are other stations playing other kind of music... apparently.
Its the nature of just having commercial broadcasting, the stations end up fragemented to a particular genre, and have to hit there demographic buttons. Its too risky to stray from the tried and tested.
Its just a shame that the CBC doesnt expand its broadcasting remit away from old fogie talk, classical, and occasional jazz broadcasting into something that would allow a canadian Jon Peel to emerge and get some proper exposure for some new acts.
