urgent reply needed! had a ding in the truck!
HI all. Need an urgent reply as need to get back to the other driver in an hour or so!!
Had a minor a dink in the truck and hit another a car. we offered to pay if the estimate was reasonable. When i looked it was a nice black scuff on the bumper and scuff on the lens. Husband went to have a look tonight and the guy is saying estimate off $1700 for new light, bummer and fender(wing???). There is a slight dent (very small) in wing right next to light. But there is also a bit of bumper now sticking out along the scuff:confused:about 90% sure it was not there when i done it:unsure: Now, should i pay the $1700, dispute it or go through ICBC? how will that affect are premiums? do we lose 5%? husband reckons another guy that had accident ended up paying another 55% on his insurance and will take years to go back to the level he was on , is that right??? |

help.........i can't be the only idiot that can hit a parked car.....right???!!!!!!
Pay it. ICBC will screw you sideways otherwise. Make sure they sign something to state that it was settled privately (quite legal). Choke, hand over money, and try not to hit anything else for nine years. |
Re: urgent reply needed! had a ding in the truck!
$1,700
Go through ICBC if I were you and let them sort it out |

Hi Jempee
If you do decide to settle privately, make sure that you have a Final Release of Claims written out with the other party. Include things such as location of accident, date, time, where damage is on vehicles, amount agreed on, both parties involved in the accident noted and both of you sign off the paperwork. It just covers your back side should there be a disagreement afterwards. Make sure that the quote only covers damage related to the accident (check out estimate from their autobody shop)! I don't know what your discount level is or if all your coverage is with ICBC (collision maybe held with another carrier?)... but if you carry a ICBC policy and put in a claim, then you have the option of repaying the claim and not having your Claims Rated Scale affected (you won't lose your % when you re-insure). If you let the expenses go through your insurance, then your discount would be affected. If you have over 8 years claims free, then other options may be available. Hope that helps somewhat. Oggy |
Re: urgent reply needed! had a ding in the truck!
Why isn't he claiming through his insurance? I had a prang a few months ago - the woman in the huge SUV behind me was yelling at her kids while trying to drink her coffee and didn't notice that the lights had changed - she went into the back of my in my little Kia Rio5. I was shaken (first car accident), we looked, because it was March neither of us could see any damage to her car and what looked like just scuffs on mine (both cars were filthy). She wanted to drive off, I demanded her information. I tried to give her mine, she didn't want it. As soon as she scribbled her info, she jumped in her car and drove off. I continued to work, when I got there I had a proper look, and the clips holding the bumper on on one side had snapped, so it was worse than originally thought. I also started getting a lot of pain in my neck and shoulder.
Went to a collision reporting centre, reported it, the insurance info they woman wrote down was illegible, but since she wrote it on her business card and I jotted down her license plate we were ok. I contacted MY insurance company (State Farm), they arranged for an estimate ($500), and the car was repaired the following week. My premiums did not go up, and State Farm then paid for my physio for the next 8 months due to severe whiplash that actually lost me the use of my right arm for a couple of days - that was fun. Since I was hit from behind it was confirmed the other woman was 100% at fault. I've always been curious about what happened to HER insurance though, since she hit me, refused to call the police, did not report it to ANYONE, and tried to pass off illegible info... |

Don't they have protected no claims here? Don't tell me if you have 43% discount and you have a minor ding you back down to 0% again?

I am not a lawyer. First - re bumper sticking out, its not abnormal in a modern vehicle where lots of things are held on with plastic clips under tension. Once knocked out of true they can work looser on normal driving over potholes etc. Ask to see the written estimate. Ask for the parts that have been replaced as they are now yours. Ask for an itemised list of replacement parts from the same place that did the estimate. Ask for a note saying the guy has the money is happy with the repair Hand over $1700. Sometimes you can get dints out by pulling (you weld a nail into the dint and pull then repair the weld - but it messes with the underside). Little ones (eg hail damage) can be popped out using dry ice - the -80C cold compared to the surrounding metal puts the dints in tension and out it comes. OEM light clusters can easily be $200 and an hour to fit, especially if bits underneath are out of true. Double that for a bumper. Ditto a new wing which may need to be colour matched and resprayed. Problem with modern vehicles is all the plastic. What looks minor on the surface can be concealing some structural damage: bent mounting points for bumpers, lights etc that all need to be straightened out before the new parts can be put on. $1700 sounds steep considering what you are telling me but not beyond the realms off possibility for the job to be done 100% right with new OEM parts fitted by a skilled mechanic. I think what you will want to avoind is handing over 1700 bucks only for the guy to get his mate at the scrapyard to fit used parts and to pop the dint out with dry ice. If you ask the for the above bits and pieces that I listed you should be protected. The attitude is, "Sorry about the dint mate. I want to put it right but Ive been told to collect these bits of paper and parts. Dont worry, I'll do all the running around to get them - I just want to be sure the repair is done properly so we can move on" For future reference folks, remember you have a camera on your phone (usually anyway) it's a life saver at times like this! Edit - where did this "hour or so" come from? I dont think that's reasonable given you have agreed to pay and his car is still presumably usable. You should perhaps help him understand that his alternative is months of buggering about with insurance companies. More haste = less speed. Take your time and do this cooly and logically. |

Another had already suggested to me to get a written/signed letter to say he is happy with the work. He has told me the garage he is using, their estimate and the date its being done. I think i will call him back and settle a few points with him that you have suggested. Thanks. Many thanks for everyones help also. |
