Wow, good photos. In the first one it looks like it's sunbathing, then in the second it is annoyed at being disturbed!

Thanks Guys,

(Credit has to go to my son for the camera skills).

we wondered what was up and why he was there, so we contacted the local university and they said he was either sick (possibly rabid), weak or confused by the recent early warm spell.

They advised us to keep him sheltered but not too warm and if he was alive the next day to let them know. We put him in a box in the garage and they came to collect him. The guy said he - yes he's a 'boy' (which was good because we named him "Tobias Archimedes Bat" LOL) was actually in pretty good shape. When found on the ground like that, it's usually a bad sign and they don't fare well.

He also said he seems to be "a fine specimen"! Looks like he came out of hibernation a bit early and got caught by the cold snap and found himself on our step (no food for him yet). He will keep him at the Uni, where he's studying the breed (small brown bat) and slowly warm him up, feed/water him and release him when the weather's right. He also promised to let us know how he does. (And he promised he won't be dissected or experimented on either )

Hi
This brought back fond memories of when we lived in Ghana when I was 4. My brother (9) and I found a bat with a broken wing nursing a baby under its good wing. It was a fruit bat and soooooo cute. We kept it on the verandah in a cardboard box hanging upside down on a twig. We fed it daily and when it was healed up...we let it go..........Ahhhhhhhh!
lol

LOL - looks bad, but he was so tiny (he fit in the palm of my sons hand). He only weighs nine grams apparently.

On a slightly different note ( but still to do with our flying friends ) does anyone know why a Chaffinch would be pecking at my window ( all day ? )

It is sitting on the frame and pecking in a line really knocking so strange, i put seed and water out as per norm but left all that ? i now have a line of marks right across the window
