UK visitors going to US via Canada

We have visitors this summer from the UK and whilst here we will be traveling to the US to see Yellowstone for a few days. I have told them that they will need the ETA for Canada and I am telling them they will also need to get a visa to go to the US. I do not want the hold up at the border (which I understand can be lengthy) however, they seem to think it will be easy peasy at US border crossing. Surely this is not right and that they should apply for a US visa before leaving the UK? Hoping someone can enlighten me on these requirements, thanks.

My eldest daughter will be one of those travellers. She has dual nationality but her Canadian passport expires in June and she doesn't want to shell out BP200 for a new passport as she has just started up a small business and money is tight so she will also be entering the US on a British passport. I am not happy about this but it is her decision. I have told her she doesn't want to leave it too long to renew the Canadian passport as she may risk losing her citizenship.

I would welcome your advice on the documents required to enter US from Canada with a British passport.

Many thanks. :-)

A Canadian passport is a travel document. Her citizenship is based upon her citizen certificate which does not expire

Thanks Almost Canadian, I thought I had read somewhere that you risk losing your citizenship if you do not visit Canada often enough and/or let your passport expire. Guess I just want her to renew her Canadian passport!

Your UK visitors do not need a visa to enter the US. They need an ESTA to visit. This can be applied for online.

I think you're thinking about the rules for Permanent Residency? Once a Canadian Citizen you are one for life regardless of where you live.

If they will be driving into the USA from Canada then no ESTA is required. They will just apply for the I94 waiver and pay $6 at the POE.

Thanks everyone, yes I must have been getting mixed up with the PRV!!! So it is a I94 for them all at the point of entry - hope the queue is short ;-)

Also remember your daughter will need a valid Canadian passport to enter Canada, Canadians can't get ETA's even if they hold another countries passport.

Thank you. My daughter has also a British Passport which she, together with her partner and his parents, will be entering Canada with and is aware of the visa requirements for entering Canada.

I think what people are trying to point out to you/your daughter is this:
Dual Canadian citizens need a valid Canadian passport

Nothing to do with visa requirements.

Thank you Shirtback, I have written to her today sending the link and I hope she understands and renews her passport. :-)

Not if they're entering by land, assuming they have British passports that's all they need. And $6 each. CBP can see the ETA information, bear in mind. There's been an agreement in force for several years now that CBP can see the Canadian entry records for third country nationals.

It's going to be extended to everyone once bill C-23 passes.

Yeah, that's the key point.
