Just checking out the BBC Radio 1 singles chart (as I often do on a Sunday evening). Although being rather disturbed that Waving the Flag is #3, I was pleased to see that Three Lions, World in Motion and Vindaloo are all back in the charts - as well as Dizzee at #1. As for El Tel and 'If I can Dream' - what more can you say?
In the 70's I grew up listening to my Dad's music; Led Zep, Hendrix, Dylan, Deep Purple, the Small Faces and many more. When I was 13 I got into Punk, which I love to this day. I play the Buzzcocks and the Clash to my two boys in the same way my Dad played Led Zeppelin to me. In my twenties I was privileged to be in the generation who embraced the Stone Roses, the Charlatans, James, the Inspirals, Happy Mondays, Primal Scream and that whole Madchester baggy scene. I even remember some of it! In my early 30's we had Brit Pop. Remember Pulp, Supergrass, Dodgy, the Verve, Radiohead? Along the way we had Madness and the Specials, Echo and the Bunnymen, Billy Brag, and many other real talents. (I'm trying hard to pretend that Rick Astley et al never actually existed!) These days I still listen to all the above, but I also listen to as much new music as I can (mostly courtesy of 6 Music [Another worthy subject by the way]). And yes, I actually like Dizzy Rascal. And I also believe Pete Doherty is a talented song writer and musician. So being middle aged, should in no way suggest we are not appreciative of music, old or new. Steve Lamacq is 44 by the way. Nobody is more influential in new music than him. And World In Motion by New Order is the best football song ever made. |
