UK Drivers Licence
#1

So quick question...
My UK drivers licence is about to expire and I have had (or rather my in-laws have had) the paperwork to renew but is it really worth doing that?
Surely I can drive in the UK on my BC licence so is there any point?
Thoughts please.
Thanks in advance,
Zoé M.

As I just pointed out in the other thread, it's illegal under BC law to hold more than one licence. Including a licence from another jurisdiction.

Not quite, it is illegal to carry more than one license or present a non BC license if you are a BC license holder, in the event of a traffic incident within BC. A UK license that has not expired is still valid. I hold more than one license, however I only carry one with me.

Section 25 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1996 says:
There are no exceptions, I've had a good read through the Act.
(4) If the applicant for a driver's licence has at any time before making the application held a driver's licence issued under this Act or in another jurisdiction, the applicant must, at the time that he or she is issued a driver's licence under this Act, surrender the last driver's licence or duplicate of it held by him or her, unless the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia on cause shown to the corporation's satisfaction dispenses with its production.
(5) At the same time that he or she has a driver's licence issued under this Act, a person must not have a driver's licence issued by another jurisdiction or have another driver's licence previously issued under this Act.

Yes you can, and no, there is no point. If you go back to GB to live you just exchange your BC license for a GB one. If you don't go back to the UK why would you need a GB license?

Twenty years ago ICBC did not take your old license, they just wrote the BC license number on the front of it.

I'm not clear on why they've suddenly decided to start enforcing that section and causing people confusion, it appears to have been in the Act since it was originally enacted.
I know I renewed my licence here recently and they were making a song and dance about it too ("are you sure you surrendered your licence, we have to take your old licence off you too"), I think it must be some anti-fraud drive or something.

I think section 25 (4) roughly says that if you have an existing license you must surrender it unless ICBC decide you don't have to. that said, ICBC are notoriously inconsistent in apply their rules and the law.

Yeah but I'm in Alberta, not sure why the sudden concern about other licences, it's been illegal for ages.

As has been posted a few times, BC has only just started allowing swaps. The concern about other licenses is going to mainly due to that policy change and not much to do with that 1996 act you've quoted a few times.
