Hi

I brought my lcd tv to Canada and it works great with a dvd player I bought in Canada but when I got my cable installed (Shaw) I was told to get a european adaptor which I got, I connected it to my tv and although I can see the channels it is a bit fuzzy and the sound is distorted. I have tried fiddling with the connectors but still the same:confused: Am i missing something ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

Its a LG tv and the convertor I take it you mean the power supply?
I got a power cable from here as the tv is dual voltage and as I said it
seems to work fine apart from the sound.

How are you inputting the signal?

Are you using a seperate cable box, or just feeding the cable signal into the TV tuner?


I sounds like its stuck trying to play the local NTSC signal in PAL mode.

Im told most modern UK flat screesn should be able to handle an NTSC signal, so thats a bit odd.

Iain.. I have it connected just with the shaw cable no set top box..
When I try to fine tune the picture it makes no difference.
Its maybe a problem with the cable?:unsure: I only have one tv
maybe a canadian tv would help me find the problem. Il try and get
a cheap one and try that. Thanks

Hard to know how bad the problem is, are you getting something fuzzy and no sound, or just nothing, or black and white and flickery?

Does your TV have an NTSC tuner? If its a UK one it probably doesnt as UK TV is PAL, so it cant decode the signal.

If you feed it a signal through a cheapo local VCR, then can you get sound and pics? Sounds to me like the TV doesnt have an onboard NTSC tuner... It will work with a NTSC signal feed from a cable or satelite box or VCR/PVR to the input channels, but it cant work directly with the signal from the cable out of the wall via its own tuner.

If the VCR is on and in the "VCR" mode we get snow and ghosly images and no sound until we change the VCR input to "TV" using the remote. I dont really know what the difference is, but thats happened with every VCR and PVR we have had...the recorder had to be either off or in the right mode for TV to be clear on anything but the VCR input. Could that be it, is the signal to the telly coming in via a VCR? Is your DVD just DVD, or is it a VCR combo?

I presume your TV is HD capable?

I can't answer the sound issue but if you are watching regular channels and not the HD channels then you can expect them to be a bit fuzzy it's just the nature of HD TV's in north America.

I think you'll find the resolution of regular channels is only 480p whereas HD is 720p maybe upgraded to 1080i by your cable box.

No its not connected to vcr or dvd the cable is attached to a splitter one with the internet and other for the tv.. Maybe getting a vcr is an option.

The picture is ok , its as if it just cant settle on the channel properly when you try to tune it. Just noisy:frown:

With out knowing the model from the LG range I can only generalise.
But most of the LG I have looked at will only handle NTSC (Canadian TV) threw the SCART, therefore you will probably need some type of box, e.g. a cable box.
(Some of the TVs I have worked on say they will only do NTSC threw SCART but if it was put threw the tuner SOME (only some) do display a sort of picture. So what they mean is they would not guaranty it work or that it was any good, unless it is inputted threw the SCART (some TVs just do not display anything at all if NTSC is put into the tuner)).

BUT this all depends on which LG you have.

Some LG models sold in the UK will according to there web site work on 240V (U.K mains) and 110V (Canadian mains) without a power convert.

My model is 32L C3R
I think it will need a scart I dont know if running it through a vcr
will do the trick ?

I cant give an exact answer as the LG web site has no info on this model.:confused:
Due to no access to the LG spec/manual I have to relay on non afflation website specs.
But from other sites it looks like it is Canadian TV (NTSC) only threw the SCART only.

If it only needs a SCART the VCR could be a good way to convert it, but it would have to be a Canadian VCR (NTSC). You would have to use the VCR channel changer when you wanted to change channel and keep the TV on SCART input.

It also looks like it may be a UK (230v) only supply, so the power convert will be needed. You should be able to check for your self quite easily, on the back cover label it should say ~230 if so UK only, is 110~230 or 100~230 it should be setup for Canadian power (110v).

Im going to buy a cheapo vcr and try the scart through that.
The tv works ok with a canadian power supply watching dvds etc.
I bought the telly about 3 years ago but il check the model no again.

You won't find a VCR with a SCART connection, SCART is a european connector. You'll most likely have to use a component connection instead (green, red and blue connectors) but should end up with the same result.

SCART is European but as he has a European TV the TV has SCARTs. It is usually easy to get a cable with a SCART plug on one ends and Phone plugs on the other end (usually Yellow, white, Red e.g. video, left and right sound).

An HD LCD will almost certainly have component inputs so why bother with SCART at all? Just use the component output of a VCR (or DVD player, or PS3 or whatever) straight into the component input on the TV.
Also, I'd recommend getting a proper digibox and getting the Shaw digital channels, much better quality picture (although the programmes are still rubbish :rofl: ). You quite often see them 2nd hand on craigslist/kijijijijijiji or they are only $100 or so brand new from Shaw.
