Three most memorable moments......
1 Attachment(s)
since moving to Canada........
For me, in no particular order really......... 1. Watching Mama Mia then having a few glasses of wine on the balcony of the Park Hyatt In Toronto looking south over the city one warm summers night 2. First visit to Cobourg beach 3. Build my first thing, namely a deck. Never been particularly DIY oriented but kind of proud of it. I find it nice that an hour west there is the 'big city' and hour east a gorgeous beach. Would be nice to have the Rockies nearby, but guess you can' have everything! Anyone else care to share a top three? |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
In order of experience...
1) First skiing lesson for me, husband and 2 boys and then me moving off the bunny hill to the intermediate hill in lesson 2 2) Finally buying/moving into our farm after 4 years of planning 3) Felling our first tree on said farm this weekend (maybe that's just because it just happened). It did feel good though having a go when we would have just brought someone in to do it for us in England! |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
I was in Cobourg on Friday and even put my feet in the water. Bloody cold.
and emmae, a farm in Peterborough? Also not far from me, I'm in Hastings. Memorable moments. Graduating from Fleming Hearing again with my implant Dog sledding in Haliburton Forest. Not sure if the third one is a 'most' memorable moment but it is today. Emmae, are you free to meet for a coffee sometime? |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
Good question, I will of course be leaving out the obvious meeting my hubby, marrying my hubby replies - but more personal occasion related stuff is :
1) Taking my youngest daughter horseriding through the badlands late afternoon with her riding western :o I have a beautiful photo of it. 2) Fishing at Police Outpost (more or less on the american border) early evening, with eerily calm water, beautiful sunset and a bald eagle flying overhead. 3) riding a sled (skidoo) / quad for the first time. I sometimes, even when i'm driving down the highway say out loud "holy shit i'm driving on the wrong side of the road, listening to country music, in a car Jeremy Clarkson would have a field day with, IN CANADA - how f****g lucky am I  |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
love this thread and the moments already added. hope more people add their moments too... (and that I can do the same soon):)

Re: Three most memorable moments......
Like Moo, I shall forgo the obvious answers about family stuff - the younger two of my three kids were born here, so they'd be in there for most memorable moments.
1. moving into our house. Since then, there have been numerous small DIY victories - making a whole wall of built-in bookshelves, sorting all the plumbing and electrics to move the laundry down into the basement, fixing up the deck - but the day we first occupied "our" space was pretty special. 2. watching huge great chunks of ice plummet over Niagara Falls in early spring with my parents when they came visiting. 3. scampering up my favourite local hillclimb in a newly-Canadian-registered Morgan after finally sorting out the import and licensing documentation. |

Like others, giving birth to a Canadian is top of the list.
But, 3 for sharing are: 1. Sat on our deck the first evening after moving into our house in Fredericton with my fantastic hubby and enjoying the view, peace and quiet, and a glass of wine. We even got a free firework show that night from the hotel about 10kms away. 2. Visiting Hopewell Rocks and Fundy Park in NB with my mum and sister. Still the best bit of NB as far as I'm concerned. 3. Designing our house in Fall River, NS from scratch, and seeing it being built. I'm really pleased with the job we did, although we will be leaving soon for pastures new. |

That waterfront festival in Cobourg had the full gambit of food that appeals to mouth breathers. |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
1. Finally skiing Whistler as a 'local'.
2. Seeing our first bear, as it munched flowers next to the Sea to Sky highway. 3. Being called a "giver" by a Canauckian whilst playing hockey (still not sure if that was a compliment!) |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
1) The day I hooked a big 20lbs + salmon,
2) When I lost that big salmon 3) When I caught and landed another one ten minutes later. |

1 - Skiing most of the bottom half of the peak to creak run in 2 foot of untracked fresh powder. The ski patrol had roped it off for some reason - even though it was actually open (I asked them). 2 - Taking my mum and dad whale watching. 3 - Ferry rides - any and all of them. |

Re: Three most memorable moments......
None of mine have any particular relevance to having been in Canada but, here you go:
- driving under the bed of a speeding tractor-trailer, watching the rear wheels of the trailer come through the passenger door and across the passenger seat as if in slow motion, realizing that the truck had stopped and I was not dead. - hearing "I'm not going to give a diagnosis of autism as that's a death sentence, but that's what this is". - watching someone attempt suicide before me, not believing it was actually going to happen. By way of Cancon: - horse riding in snow up to the stirrups - fishing out someone who'd fallen overboard in April, knowing that the toxicity of the lake water was a bigger concern than hypothermia - walking out nervously on to a frozen river, wondering how far to push it, seeing an F series bowling along the river towards me. |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
Feeling of contentment at wedding dinner - although technically I hadn't moved here yet as I had to return to England, finish work and sell the house before coming back to join my wife and step kids.
Buying the house and listening to her excitement in telling her parents about the new home when they met us at the airport after our house buying trip. Moving to the new house, step son taking a look around it and then coming to hug me. |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
driving through yellowstone park and seeing buffalo&bear,
driving on hwy 1 with unit in fast lane and trailor on inside lane due to iced rd taking 2hrs when it usualy took 20mins, being morgage free..:) |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
Me
1. Sitting watching a large and gorgeous grizzly in a meadow in front of us at Peter Lougheed Park, while we were all whispering and manically trying to get the best photo - Oi! out the way, my turn ... :D 2. Whitewater rafting last summer in Idaho, looking at the wildlife above us in the trees and beside us on the river banks (and swearing under my breath that I hadn't brought the camera!) 3. Driving in the back end of beyond (well, near Red Deer anyway ;) ) in the dark, with contact lenses that were not up to scratch so I couldn't read road signs till I was right up on them (!) and desperately trying to locate my husband on some random campus because he was badly injured, and then hitting and running down a deer that ran out in front of me, all the while telling children in the back of the car "oh, nothing, just a bump in the road darling". Stressed  Hubby 1. Jumping off Mount 7 at Golden (3,800 ft) last weekend - with a paraglider strapped to my back, I hasten to add. 2. Going through training school and listening to "Scouting for Girls" on the way home, to save my sanity when feeling like crap! (especially The Airplane Song and I need a Holiday). 3. Listening to Daughter Number One sing in a school production. She had a microphone booming out across a silent hall, and we were dumbstruck at how brilliant she was. Seriously good, not just bragging parents! |

Horse riding on a frozen lake, Pulling snow from a roof using a 3 x 1/2"plank while standing in snow higher than me arse. I'm not very tall so it's a low down bum. Running over a snake. |
Re: Three most memorable moments......
1. My first and probably very wisely my last skiing experience, unless I get up the gumption to fall down a mountain again this Winter.
2. Niagara Falls in the Winter, amazing. 3. Is going to happen in September when my parents visit, for what will more than likely be their only visit, three weeks that I am really looking forward to. |

Re: Three most memorable moments......
Just of the top of my head and in no particlular order
1) sailing a brigantine round the island in winds so strong we were almost dipping the rail. just as memorable were the blistered hands and sore arms the day afterwards 2) dinner at the top of the CN tower on a very dark and clear night , thinking " oh my god I actually live here" ( Toronto , not the tower :) ) 3) Hearing Ben on the radio doing his first solo flight. I'm hoping to add soon The first time I go up as a passenger with Ben flying the plane Seriously though , I still love living here and smile evrytime I see the CN tower as I leave for work and I can still sit for hours watching the lake , the airport and the sky |

he may still have to do IFR, and may need to use the ILS fitted to a 172. Thats if he is flying Cessna's, WOW what a view that would be though of Toronto.:)

Re: Three most memorable moments......
Thats good then, must have changed since i last flew, when in the UK. I had to do a few hours IFR, done during the night with blinkers on. Ha, no fun not seeing the view.
Congrats on the solo though, that is such a buzz when the pilot gets out and says, "off you go, see you in the crew room later" |

Congrats on the solo though, that is such a buzz when the pilot gets out and says, "off you go, see you in the crew room later" Probably would be a good thing though.:) Zoe do they still dump a bucket of water over "first solo's" or has that gone by the wayside? |

I don't believe there has ever been any requirement in Canada to take any IFR training for PPL.
Probably would be a good thing though.:) Zoe do they still dump a bucket of water over "first solo's" or has that gone by the wayside? PS. I picked a Daisey from the field/taxi way after my first solo and taped it into my log book |

On the equine theme, riding along with ("following") a fox hunt, was memorable and had specifically Canadian themes; casual cruelty to animals, killing of wildlife for fun, snobbery about money rather than class. No guns or clubs involved but otherwise it was rural Canada in microcosm. I've no need to do it again.

Re: Three most memorable moments......
ok Ben is learning in a 172 and I know I could sit in the back but I'm displaying extra ordinary patience and waiting for him to pass , so it really just will be him and me in the plane :)
I believe at the city airport it used to be tradition that you got dunked in the harbour :) but I think a few of them melted or summink  He has to acquire so many hours of instrument training but his IFR is a separate add rating on his licence. Believe me he has it all planned put as to what order he's gonna do them all in. Personally I have no idea how he copes with the " recovering from an usual attitude" under the hood. Last time his instructor put him in a spin and he had to recover using instruments alone. I dunno , maybe its better when you can't see the ground spinning :) |
