Re: Things you never thought you would say
Although I have no doubt that the phrase could be said in the UK, my point is that I would not have said it. There is no way we would have ended up living on a farm in the UK. Again, not because we couldn't, but because it would not have occurred to us. I think the biggest change that making a big move does is that it opens your mind to the possibility of trying new things.

Can't say I have ever tried marmot (or indeed dog), I would cheerfully fry a mink round about now though.

When I read the opening post yesterday, I thought ‘I hope it was a rat’ was some peculiar Canadian expression.

Re: Things you never thought you would say
We've always had ducks, we have bigger ones now we've got a bigger garden but even in our tiny postage stamp on an estate we had ducks. Anyway, off topic enough, but certainly a phrase it would be likely I'd say in the UK now if those bastard mink come back. I'm now going to Google and see if mink can swim as I've got a horrible feeling they can…………..

I know people keep ducks in the UK, I also know there are rats and minks there too. The post isn't about things that can be done in Canada that can't be done in the UK because, quite frankly there isn't much you can do in either place that can't be done in the other with enough determination. The post is supposed to be about how our lives often take us to places that we wouldn't have imagined - mine most certainly has - I spent 25 years working in Research and Development in the Nuclear Industry and yesterday I found myself blow drying two ducks. It is about how, having stepped out of our comfort zone once to move to another country, it is easier (again a personal thing) to find the courage to make other lifestyle changes, and thereby find ourselves saying and doing things that we never thought we would.
I have a similar one brought about from lifestyle changes you described by coming to live in Canada Mine is "I went the wrong side of the marker, but miraculously all is ok " This refers to going the wrong side of a navigation marker/bouy on my boat out on the lake, where there are normally rocks which can cause extensive damage to the boat propeller and outdrive . Although the was a nano chance I could have said this in the UK, its highly doubtful, as I would never have owned a boat, and even of I did, there is not the extensive lake and waterway system in the UK that needs navigation marker system like there is in Ontario. Plus I would not have been brave enough to buy a boat anyway!

I knew exactly what you meant HG. You didn't mean sayings....just something that you would have never uttered if you has stayed living in the UK.
