Another reason for posting was to see if others would catch this stuff. I probably wrote the Nightmare question off my own (flawed) knowledge and obviously didn't do enough research on the city quesiton.

Thanks again

K next round - Sports, all the anwers (except bonuses) are numbers so you can have a guess if you don't know. I have quite a few sports nuts coming so trying to make it interesting for them is the tough part. Here goes:
  • Rugby - how many points do you get for scoring a try in Rugby Union (unconverted)? - Bonus point - how many points for the conversion
  • Football - How many teams in the English Premier League - bonus 1 point (half point for 2) name the 4 teams that have won it since the first season in 92-93
  • Baseball - what year were the Blue Jays founded?
  • Golf - the Ryder Cup was first competed for in 1927, then between GB and the USA, how many times has it been played? Bonus point - counting the GB and Europe teams as the same, who as the most wins USA or GB/Europe
  • NHL - 12 Women have their names engraved on the Stanely Cup, how many are Canadian
  • NHL - How many regular season wins (incl OT wins) did the Flames get last year?
  • Football - The first season for the Scottish Premier League was in 98-99, so there have been 10 titles contested, how many teams have won it or placed 2nd?
  • NFL - Of the 32 teams in the NFL right now, how many have not won a Super Bowl, +/- 1 for half a point
  • Tennis - what world rank is Andy Murray
  • Olympics - Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics and Vancouver is hosting the 2010 Winter games, what year did the only other Canadian City host one of the games?

Re: Testing my Pub Quiz

Here goes indeed:
  • Rugby - how many points do you get for scoring a try in Rugby Union (unconverted)? - Bonus point - how many points for the conversion 5 + 2
  • Football - How many teams in the English Premier League - bonus 1 point (half point for 2) name the 4 teams that have won it since the first season in 92-93 20. I'm guessing at Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, and somebody else - Liverpool?
  • Baseball - what year were the Blue Jays founded? no clue. 1967
  • Golf - the Ryder Cup was first competed for in 1927, then between GB and the USA, how many times has it been played? Bonus point - counting the GB and Europe teams as the same, who as the most wins USA or GB/Europe 37 times? (gap for the war, moved from odd to even years due to 9/11). USA for more wins
  • NHL - 12 Women have their names engraved on the Stanely Cup, how many are Canadian all of them
  • NHL - How many regular season wins (incl OT wins) did the Flames get last year? oh dear - what are there, about 80 games in a regular season? Will I be flamed by flames fans if I guess at 50?
  • Football - The first season for the Scottish Premier League was in 98-99, so there have been 10 titles contested, how many teams have won it or placed 2nd? 5
  • NFL - Of the 32 teams in the NFL right now, how many have not won a Super Bowl, +/- 1 for half a point no idea. 3?
  • Tennis - what world rank is Andy Murray 5
  • Olympics - Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics and Vancouver is hosting the 2010 Winter games, what year did the only other Canadian City host one of the games? Montreal 1976

Note: in deference to your Canadian guests, you may want to clarify that in your questions football=soccer!

Thanks for the response, looks like I might need to improve this round, it's the one I've been struggling with the most, I've been trying to work back from answers that I know people at the quiz will know to get good questions. I'm hoping the answers will be such that people will kick themselves once they hear, but maybe that's tough thing to wish for...

Fledermaus' OH scores - 3 out of 12

Thanks for the grammar check and sorry for the confusion on the Jeopardy one, blame the long winded Emmy official titles might use editorial control to cut it to just best game show.

  • Prompt trading WTI Crude in Cushing hit the record high price for a barrel in early July, what was the price to within 50c/$bbl $153?
  • What is the US state capital of Washington Know it's not Seattle... is it Spokane?
  • What connects Sir Wilfrid Laurier, William Lyon Mackenzie King, Sir John A Macdonald & Sir Robert Borden (NB not that they are all ex-PMS)? Bonus point for the obvious one missing Ha! I know that. They're on Canadian banknotes... obvious one missing from the list is the Queen, on the $20 note.
  • What colour is zero on a roulette wheel? What is the payout odds when betting on zero green. The odds of landing on any given number depend on whether you're playing an American table (with double zero) or French (single zero). For a double-zero table landing odds are 1/38 (1/37 for single-0) and payout in both cases is 35:1. American casinos have a greater house advantage than European ones because they don't change the payout odds despite the extra 00 pocket. Why do I know this? I don't gamble... :o
  • In what year was the book Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix first published 2004?
  • What connects Honey Rider, Tiffany Case, Dr Christmas Jones & Vesper Lynd they're all names of Bond girls

Thanks for info on the roulette answer, taking into consideration stuff I hadn't appreciated. Answers nice and quickly today:
  • Prompt trading WTI Crude in Cushing hit the record high price for a barrel in early July, what was the price to within 50c/$bbl $145.29 quiz is with some oil folks so hope they'd get this and I've got to be pretty specific as theres lots of Oil much like the roulette variations
  • What is the US state capital of Washington Olympia
  • What connects Sir Wilfrid Laurier, William Lyon Mackenzie King, Sir John A Macdonald & Sir Robert Borden (NB not that they are all ex-PMS)? Bonus point for the obvious one missing On Canadian banknotes & Queen Elizabeth 2
  • What colour is zero on a roulette wheel? What is the payout odds when betting on zero green. & 35:1 was the answer I have
  • In what year was the book Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix first published 2003
  • What connects Honey Rider, Tiffany Case, Dr Christmas Jones & Vesper Lynd all names of Bond girls
  • Which toys name originated from the Danish for "Play Well" Lego
  • What is Oenology the study of? wine
  • Billions of people around the world know Miss Roberts better as what ? Clues - she has had over 40 pets (including a lion & a zebra), had a boyfriend from 1961 until she broke up with him in 2004, she hasn't really aged… Barbie

Any feedback on this round? Overall think I've got about 10 questions to drop and re-do and a few others to tweak to get my final list. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.

Is WTI West Texas?

I thought the peak price was $147.27 U.S. in New York and Brent was $147.50 U.S. in London?

As a non-oil person what's Cushing?

I like this round - some that you either know or you don't, some you can hazard a guess at. I wouldn't have got Barbie in a month of Sundays (daughter's too young yet to be interested, my sisters were both Sindy owners!), and I've never heard of Olympia, WA... but that'll be easy for any US-educated guests, I guess (isn't it part of the curriculum?)

BTW I re-read the question on the roulette thing and my answer was needlessly long-winded - the payout odds are set at 35:1 regardless of how many zero pockets the table has.

Hobbess Dec 8th 2008 9:20 am

Re: Testing my Pub Quiz

WTI is West Texas Intermediate which delivers in Cushing, OK when traded on the Nymex.

Good point on the record high at $147.27, I'd been looking at my history which is all based on close prices, the highest closed price was $145.29 on July 3rd, while on the 7th when it hit $147.27 in early trading it closed down at $141.37. Hence why I need to have all the details to pin it down to exactly what I'm refering to.

I'll see what I can do, need to do a little more work work and not just quiz work over the next few days. Once it's quieter over the holidays and nearer the quiz I'll throw up the questions I've modified.

No reason why others couldn't post some questions in the mean time... I'd be happy to plagiarise anything good ;)

Ok the work work thing is not happening, checked back on the suggestions and realised I was way off on my capital city question, thanks Oakvillain. I'd used a number from Santiago based on the old town not the actual city...

New question in General Knowledge:
Based a on a recent survey Canada was ranked in the top 5 countries for most stressed workers, where exactly are "we" all ranked? Bonus point for naming another country in the top 5.

NB - first part easy on this forum, 2nd I had to dig a bit to find...

Even though I'm the only one posting...I'm still keeping this alive!

Couple of other new questions to possibly replace some earlier attempts:
Christmas ones -
- In Die Hard 2 what type of location did the terrorists take over at Christmas?
- Which actor plays 5 different motion captured roles in The Polar Express movie
- Which countries football team finished runners up in Group B behind Italy in Euro 2000? (remember its a Christmas round...)
- If you were born on Christmas Day, what would your star sign be?

Entertainment -
- According to Hollywood Reporter which actor and actress are currently the highest paid based on amount per film

General -
- What colour is Mr Happy (do Canadians know of the Mr Men?)

Oh indeed. I googled for pub quiz questions, since Hobbess asked for some suggestions for more. I found paul's quiz site and thought some of his were kind of interesting (especially the 12 days of Christmas one. I actually sat and worked out the answer - incorrectly I may add - before looking it up). I was scrupulously honest in answering the previous rounds, otherwise any critique I added to the question would have been rather pointless, I'd have thought.

Interesting snippet in the paper today. It appears that google is one of the most commonly googled words.

Your scrupulous honesty was much appreciated. How did I do with my answers, I'd not seen the Myra one so that was a guess and now I'm intrigued.

Turkey is right. (Google, moi?)

Edit: BTW, I quite fancy myself at pub trivia games, but I could answer only a tiny minority of your questions. Either your friends are experts or your NYE quiz is going to foment rebellion.

Thanks for the feedback, as i've said previously I've looked at sooo many questions and stared at my own variations way too many times that I've lost all appreciation for difficulty and hence the reason for posting.

Guests are late twenties Canadians for the most part and so been aiming for questions to fit that demographic. I'm hoping that the team aspect/discussion time will also help people get a couple of answers that are tough individually. In my mind I have a final score of about 70/100 as winning which seems reasonable. Plan is also to play it fairly loose and if I feel extra clues are needed along the way then I'm not going to be stuck to what I've typed out.

Fingers crossed anyway and any more suggestions more than welcome, it's really appreciated.

Turkey it is. I found that question somewhere on Paul's Quiz pages too, I think.

It's on the south coast, northeast of Rhodes.

There's whole heap of trivia in St Nicholas's life story - he has all sorts of weird legends associated with him. Once upon a time I sang in a performance of Britten's "St Nicholas," which is effectively a biographical cantata/oratorio, so read up on some of the more outlandish stories. One of those is the legend of the Pickled Boys who had apparently been murdered and pickled in brine by a butcher, who then tried to serve them for dinner to Nicholas and his travelling companions in an inn. He miraculously brought them back to life and everybody sang hallelujah loudly. This legend still forms part of the Christmas tradition in bits of Eastern France, apparently, where Père Noël is accompanied by the evil butcher, Père Fouettard, who threatens the bad kids with chopping them up and pickling them.

as an ego-massaging aside, we were delighted with how well the concert was reviewed, and I've just found that the review's still out there in cyberspace: http://www.mvdaily.com/articles/2000/12/camden.htm
