I always went with Shaw, nothing but issues with Telus. Experiences will vary.

Re: telus or Shaw
I used to be on Shaw, but moved to Telus to get the free HD PVR.
I had no problems with Shaw, and similarly have experienced none with Telus. The internet speeds are fast, the cable package gives me more channels, and the TV Guide thingy looks better. Havent experienced any downtimes or anything, and would gladly recommend them... |
Re: telus or Shaw
Shaw wins hands down for me.
Telus tried to stitch us up when we moved house and make us pay for the 'free' desktop computer we had received. The only reason we originally had to change to Shaw was because Telus couldn't provide us with telephone plus internet in our new home, which happened to be in Calgary??!! A couple of strongly worded letters, and the charge was dropped, but I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Shaw have provided a much better service, and we've found them to be alot cheaper than Telus |

Re: telus or Shaw
I prefer cable over satellite/DSL so would stick with Shaw.
You could call them up and say you are considering leaving unless they give you a better deal, they'll do something at least. |

Shaw now own Starchoice, so they do offer satellite :p
One thing I like with satellite is the time shifting. The networks from every time zone. |
Re: telus or Shaw
We were with Telus for 2 years and changed to Shaw when we moved to Sherwood Park. We didn't like Telus, mainly problems with internet and emails.

Re: telus or Shaw
Hi,
I did as suggested, called Shaw and told them I may leave to go to Telus, I was offered full cable package for 6 months free ( currently have just basic) and a hd PVR for 6 months free, then to purchase it for just $249, and the current digital box I rent for $2.95, completely free . Really happy with that so sticking to Shaw, thanks for everybody,s input Sue |

Re: telus or Shaw
When we lived in Canada, we had both. Telus first (internet and phone) and then Shaw for phone, internet and cable.
I have to say that I preferred Shaw service, especially in later years. You could never get a real live person at Telus and their service was terrible (if you needed a call out, see you in 2-3 days kinda thing). Shaw tended to send someone within a day. That said, Shaw fell out of my good books after we moved and they kept our credit from our account until recently. We had about $130 credit on file, they acknowledged this, yet it took them 5 months to send us the cheque. They said it was "processing." We had to call and harass them weekly for months to get our refund. Actually my family back in Canada had to do this. We had left Canada by then. So, I guess as long as they don't owe you any money, Shaw is fine. |
Re: telus or Shaw
Bumping an old thread since it's the same question.
Currently with Shaw and have been since being in Canada, have no real complaints for what we get from them. However, the Telus deal for their new Optik system is pretty good. I was paying $105/mth for HD Basic plus High Speed with Shaw. The Telus deal (with a 3 year contract...) meant for $112/mth I would get Internet, HD You Pick (everything but movies in HD), free PVR rental & free Xbox 360. So a little more for some better service and my Shaw bill was due to go to $110 next month anyway. The neat thing I like about the Telus deal is their new system means you can watch recorded shows on multiple TVs. You do need hardware in each location, but the 360 can be used as a digi-box or I was planning on buying a new box for $150 to do this rather than use a power hungry 360. I could also sell my shaw HD box and PVR on Kijiji to make all this even more easy on the wallet. Called Shaw and they have got a short reprieve by getting me HD plus and reducing my bill to $63/mth for 6 months. In the mean time I still like this Telus deal, but want to check on Telus service. The Shaw guy did a good job planting the seed of doubt about their service since the one connection brings in TV & Internet. So what are peoples experience, if on Telus do you notice issues with internet service? |
Re: telus or Shaw
I've just had someone call at my house offering this deal with Telus too. We are on Shaw for internet & house phone and I'm quite happy with it especially the downloading speeds. My friend who has just moved over from the UK has internet with Telus and her d/l speeds are like she is on dial up!!

Re: telus or Shaw
Been with Telus for a year now. Outstanding service, no reception problems, no complaints. Were with Shaw prior to that and they were not interested in matching or getting close to the offer from Telus, so I switched. Shaw still have not got the message and keep sending me flyers, even after I phoned and told them not to. They don't seem to be able to follow simple instructions.
When Telus installed they put in new phone sockets by each TV no charge and came back and moved some stuff around, no charge. |

Very constructive and helpful answer. I don't think they are allowed to do that though!

Re: telus or Shaw
Four or five years ago Telus went through a terrible patch of customer service.
I have always been with Shaw (and Rogers before them) cable for TV and Internet but switched to Shaw for my land line when they started their digital phone service. Shortly afterward a Telus sales rep called me up to ask why I had canceled my Telus phone service. "I've switched to Shaw," I said, "Yes, well, I can understand that," was all he could reply. You don't hear so many complaints about Telus these days so I guess they have sorted some of their customer service problems out. I wouldn't go bank to them for the sake of a freebie however. I don't like the idea of being tied into a contract. |

My wife works for Shaw, so this is probably biased, but with Telus you have to have a digital receiver (or PVR) to get a signal, so if your free PVR packs up within the timescale of your contract, you would have to get it fixed, and in the time you have it fixed, you would have NO tv reception at all.

Telus is bad and is getting worse (don't know about their TV, but their "high speed" internet is garbage) and it's getting worse. Their cell service is doing the same - I'm losing more and more text's into the ether. My son works for Shaw direct at their call centre so is very well versed in their satellite TV hardware and programming. We have Bell Satellite at home and he feels that it's much better than Shaw and he would choose Bell over Shaw every time. They can be a pain if you need to 'talk' to them though - but I don't think there's too much between them when it comes to customer service - it's a crap shoot. Thinking of switching to Rogers (same company as Shaw) for my cell phone, but we're rural so couldn't have cable even if we did want it. |
