Summer trip to The Rockies-suggestions please!
We want to visit the Rockies in the summer with our 2 kids (10 and 8). We are in Vancouver and intend to travel for about 8 days. Have never been before and wondered if anyone had any good routes/ accommodation tips? Not the best at camping, but want to keep it as cheap as possible, so maybe camping cabins etc..? Many thanks.

Re: Summer trip to The Rockies-suggestions please!
have you checked out the www.bbcanada.com, great website for bed and breakfast.....best route in my opinion from vancouver is the manning parkway (route 3) to osoyos, then over to grandforks, creston and up through to alberta.....or creston, across on the ferry back to nelson, kaslo then upto revelstoke....or, vernon, nakusp upto the three valleys and then onto banff, up the icefield parkway to jasper, cut across to 100 mile house or to lilloett.....fab routes which ever way you do it...have fun....:D

Jasper & Banff Provincial parks were great campsites, and a site in lake Logan too was very rural but great for kids!!
Agree with previous poster whatever way you go it's just beautiful, we did a 3 week road trip for our honeymoon in a camper! Loved it!! http://www.milehighresort.com/camping.htm |

Although all routes are great, I'd do the south route (Crowsnest). Its longer because the road is not the slightest bit straight. But the scenery is great and it is probably the most historic route (historic in Canadian terms that is). I would make Nelson a home base to do some exploring. Try a number of hot springs in the area (Ainsworth, Halcyon, Nakusp - my personal favorite). Then go on to Cranbrook (more historic sites around there). Continue on through the Crowsnest Pass to Alberta. Check out Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, Frank Slide. Then head up #22 toward Calgary. Another spectacular drive through the foothills. Then take the Trans Canada back through Banff and Lake Louise. Or for something different, turn left half way between Banff and Lake Louise and go through Radium (and sit in the hot pools there too). But then you'll miss Yoho which would be unfortunate. That's what I'd do. |
