Sugar Shack
 

I went to the sugar shack yesterday a time honoured tradition of quebec.

On the menu

Pea Soup, crispy bacon, fried fat, scambled eggs, ham, baked beans, roast potatoes, pancakes, sugar pie, all covered in maple syrup. One member of our group was drinking maple syrup straight from the bottle.

I didn't realise until yesterday that you could get drunk on maple syrup. By the end of lunch, my friends were singing show tunes and being shouted at by the staff for trying to make extra maple taffy after the taffy table was closed.

After lunch dancing and a sleigh ride.

Is this just a quebec thing or do other provinces have similar traditions?

Ontario too, well the bits that have sugar maples.

Maple syrup is a drunk person’s greatest enemy. The fact that it’s sticky and liquid requires taking some serious precautions when ones hand eye coordination is lacking. For the next few drunk food options I highly suggest recruiting a DD (designated drencher) who can regulate the use of maple syrup to avoid spills and getting syrup in your hair.

You cannot get drunk on Maple syrup, unless you mix alcohol with it. You can be sick though if you have too much.

After intake your blood glucose will rise very quickly, then return to normal, it can be a quick carb for energy.

what on earth is that? isn't it just fat?

Yes just spotted that. Although the bacon in the stores here are 90% fat, you have to grill them to within 1 second from carbonizing so they're crispy. Cook for less time and I would find them nasty to eat. Maybe that's what it is, crispy fat.

Yep it's cispy fat. It look like fried crispy bacon but it is white. It look a bit like pork scratchings

Was it that one to the south of Rigaud...that is on top of the hill?

We have them in Ontario, although the singing/dancing aspect isn't that big of a deal..more of a pancakes/bacon/eggs/maple syrup kind of feast...

I went to the Elmira Maple Syrup festival in 2008. Sadly they were out of pancakes when we got there, but I did manage to saw a log, eat popcorn and visit one of the fields nearby. All in all it was a fun time.

Ah, that makes sense...I could only visualise re fried dripping or something (apols to those of a sensitive stomach)
