This sucks for new folks
I get the whole seniority thing, but surely the union could have cut a better deal? You start at $20 and have to wait 10 flippin years to get the top rate
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/repor...62/?cmpid=rss1 Shame everything else in your life won't remain at the same rate during the time |

There are thousands and thousands of workers (including me) that haven't had a pat raise in the past couple of years, and have a wage freeze 'indefinitely', despite contracts tied to incremental grades that are supposed to kick in every 12 months. If you don't like the conditions, find another employer.

With all the benefits it's still a heck of a good deal for a pretty unskilled job.

Isn't it the case that the big three are bound by the contract to fill any vacancies by recalling union workers before they hire new workers. There are plenty of laid off workers and, as Canada is now supposed to have the highest paid auto workers in the world, it is unlikley that there will be any new investment here.
Pay rates for new hires are somewhat moot. |

Unionised jobs in the car plants are good work for the average joe, if you can get in there. When I worked in Auomotive it was not uncommon for many of the unionised shop floor workers to have better pay and benefit than some of the engineers supporting them. Clearly there is no long term future in a pay structure that generous, so this is the employers and the union starting to redress that. |

Yeah, but working for Ford or GM shouldn't really be classed as a government job.

Arsed.
I'm sick of hearing about unions and strikes and pay rises, etc. It seems every 5 minutes someone is on strike over something in Canada. |
