Souvenir's summer weather forecasting service

Following on from the huge success of my prediction for winter snowfall in the National Capital Region, I feel duty-bound to share my thoughts on what summer will be like.

In July, the temperature will pass 30 degrees on four days; five tops (excluding humidex).

I bet you're wondering how I do this, not to mention why?

Is that Celsius or Fahrenheit?

dbd33 will want to know.

With my track record, I doubt it matters much.

Have you confirmed this forecast with either Ian Black or JJ Clarke?

Looks like it is batten down the hatches time here in Ottawa. Up to 50 cm of snow sounds much better than 20 inches don't you think? I've noticed since this storm has been predicted all of the snowfall accumulations are in cm and not inches...do you think that metric has taken over?

We've been promised 20 inches but so far have less than one. I hear a lot of muttering about the forecasters being male.

According to data back to 1960, both days should be 26-27 degrees, not including humidex (which pushes things into the high 30s or low 40s). The mode, median and mean (full-fat and trimmed) agree pretty closely on that. The chances of it being below 20 are slim. Between them, those two days have only provided days <20 four times in the last 48 years and even then it was a close call.

It could well be hotter than average. Over half of the 30+ degree days recorded since 1960 have been in the last 10 years, a third of them in the last three years. Also, snowy winters (250cm+) tend to be followed by above average temperatures on those two August days.

Be warned, though, July is typically pretty wet. Apocalyptic thunderstorms are common.

Why? There will still be four feet of snow on the ground in July.
