Solicitor fees for buying in Canada
I did a search but could not find anything that answered my question (although someone will probably find it).
We are now shaking ourselves to look at homes and although we now we won't have to pay the Realtor what we don't know is how much could we expect to pay for a solicitor to draw up the agreement.
Can this fee be negotiated, or is it fixed on the price of the house? We would obviously shop around, but being a small community (even though it's a city) I would imaging that the costs would be comparative.

Your Realtor will draw up the agreement "offer to purchase" and not your lawyer.
The lawyer handles the land transfer (at least here in Manitoba, Provinces vary)
In Winnipeg they charge between $400 and $500 for a standard sale or purchase.

What AC and MBR said is broadly comparable to what we've been charged on one sale and two purchases in ON and QC.
The solicitor doesn't do much (the legal assistant does all the leg-work), so be warned that for such a small amount of money, you won't be at the top of the priority list. Keep the pressure on. I have bitter experience of this.

Thank you all for your replies I have given so many people advice about reading the wiki and I didn't read it myself (sorry Judy and other contributors)
I was aware about writing up the offer and some of the other costs incurred such as a septic tank survey we're not joined up in Regina Beach and in some cases a geology report becuase we are in the Qu'appelle Valley.
I didn't know if we had to pay a lawyer large amounts to change the title deeds. Better to be forearmed.

Try Bernie Duchin. He would be pretty reasonable. 359-3131.
Don't go to the bigger firms. They charge the tariff and might give a percentage discount but its not going to be cheap.
The purchaser has to pay the ISC fees for registering the transfer. They charge .3% of the value of the property. A mortgage costs $150. Searches cost $10 per title.
The guy I work for could do it but we have real estate deals coming out our ying yang right now and I don't think Joyce wants any more! We were discussing the other day how she would turn down complicated deals, like the ones with 17 caveats on the title - but you never know its going to be complicated until several days later. She is now giving a quote but telling the people - if it turns out to be a complicated deal - we will have to charge more than that!
