So..... Trump!
Rightly or wrongly, politics aside, Trump has won. Apparently the CIC website has crashed several times in the last 12 hours, with what is rumoured to be Americans checking out their options. I'm wondering what the thoughts are of the BE community. Do you feel an influx of Americans is on the cards, and, if so, I assume this will have some effect on the overall immigration process, even if only to make the pool of applicants larger. We were looking into starting our application process early next year, though haven't yet decided which route to go (that's another question for another day!) - so wondered what the general consensus on the ground is!

Re: So..... Trump!
If I were you, I'd get an application in asap, and not wait until next year just in case! It would be unusual to have a choice of more than one route, if you do have the luxury of several routes to choose from then that's different, but assuming you'd be applying under EE, I'd apply now before the Yanks can push the points threshold up even higher. Or before Canada decides to build their own wall.

Strange now how so many pundits on radio saying how they thought yeh he could win it, when no one gave him a chance up to 12 hours ago Lol

Shocked and dismayed. I thought the US was better than that. Hope his campaign rhetoric was bluster, but in any case, it's going to be a grubby four years.

It's become clear that even the humblest among the forgotten had one valuable vote and it was used to great effect. |

JOB SECURITY On a serious note it will be really interesting to see where ITA points go, the last few draws had started to show a fall. I cant apply till January so just crossing my fingers that no one leaves until he is actual elected. Come on Americans where's that 1776 spirit you always talk about. |

Re: So..... Trump!
It surprises me why people are shocked, regardless if we like it or not. Over the years he's always been asked if he would stand for president and this video shows it all. Even in 1987 Oprah asked him and he said he would win LOL

Re: So..... Trump!
I'm not overly shocked by this. I thought it would be much, much closer than it eventually ended up being.
The real issue here are the people who voted for him. Why did they vote for him, and if it was for some of his deplorable comments / opinions / traits, then how can you change that, if it's even possible. Some have said that CIC took their website down themselves, as they knew it'd likely be overloaded and take itself down. I think we will see more americans *trying* to relocate to Canada, and finding out how difficult that actually is. A few people I was talking to this morning thought they could simply have an american marry them (as they are PR / Citizen of Canada) and then they'd get some kind of Canadian status. I pointed out that it wouldn't really help, as you don't instantly get PR or Citizenship if you marry a PR / Citizen. You would, to get spousal PR, need to be living together for at least 12 months, so if you're not at that point, you have to get there. I'd say that there will be heavier scrutiny on spousal apps moving forwards. I also saw polls about wether it should be easier for american's to emigrate to Canada, seems the majority said "No", and I agree with that. |

There is no real issue at all. The electorate voted for whichever candidate they felt best represented their interests and the result reflected that. If, in 4 years time, the electorate wishes for "change", it will have the right to vote again. Personally, I think it will be refreshing to have a leader of a significant country that doesn't care about being politically correct and will say whatever he wishes to say. Time will tell whether he is a success, or a failure. |

He didn't detail his proposed policies so people must have chosen him based on his personality. |
