Re: So I Tried My Self-Cleaning Oven.......
mind you any cleaning is a bad idea as far as I am concerned. Ben enquired yesterday if there was any reason for the fact that he keeps finding small plastic balls on the bathroom floor. I had to advise him that it was the result of dyson vs sachet of silica gel

Tell Ben to try using the dyson on the bathroom floor himself

So now I'm really scared....
Looked at my oven and I have FOUR options;
1 Speed clean
2 Clean
3 Max clean
or
4 Maybe just dont dare?
I looked at the manual but wow you need a scientific degree; took me long enough to figure; convention bake, convention roast, BROIL etc etc. and 400 degrees?
Should have know it was trouble when it says "professional series" on the front!
Why cant I just turn it to 220 and leave it?
Thats what I've always done before; food OK and nobody died!

Re: So I Tried My Self-Cleaning Oven.......
This seems a good place to admit to my only disappointment in Canada so far.
There are no housework fairies here. I magically expected that when I moved over here, that as all my other cares would disappear, that wee fairies would come and do all the housework.
Unfortunately, still have to hoover, iron (although not nearly so much!), cook, food shop and wash. Ah, but it is in a far nicer location and the food shopping is still exciting as we try out all these new things. Tomato pringles anyone?

Re: So I Tried My Self-Cleaning Oven.......
OH bought me a Newfoundland cook book for my birthday so have tried a couple of recipes so far:
brewis (salt cod and hard bread) - OH not so keen, dogs loved it .
meatloaf - hit all round.
I am currently loving the waffles that go in the toaster - some particularly good flax seed and blueberry ones been found (kidding myself I am being healthy before adding the maple syrup!).

This is Officer Bill - Oven Intervention Specialist. Remain calm, I'll talk you through this. Take your hands away from the self-clean controls, but don't make any sudden movements. Now relax your shoulders and place your hands at your sides. Done that? Good. Now back slowly away from the oven. No need to panic, just one step at a time. Are you now at least 10 feet from the oven? Brilliant! You're now out of what we call the "danger zone". Whenever you feel the urge to self-clean the oven, repeat these steps, and nobody will get hurt.

I remember Souvenir, I think, posting a step by step guide to buying a Canadian home, or maybe it was Steve P, and they said something hilarious about the appliances that were left with the house - in my case they were right, although most importanly the dishwasher is fairly new and works well

The people we bought from have built on the plot next door and so are now our neighbours. It's easy to make them feel really bad about what we've had to spend out on the replacements for the crappy appliances they left us, and as he's in the trades (various!) everytime we need something doing, we get work done for free. So its all good
