Default Snowman - wrong kind of snow?

We tried to make a snowman this weekend, but couldn't roll a snowball to make one.

Is this normal?

Do we have the wrong kind of snow here in Québec?

Powdery snow is no good for snowmen. Too dry. You need big, wet flakes.

I hated snowball fights as those dam things hurt if it got you on the face, I do like the fights we have here, we use snow shovels and scoop up as much snow as we can and chuck it at eachother and its great cos the snow does not soak you as much as the snow back home, but its cold when the suckers roll you in it and shove it up your jumper my OH waited one day on my daughter coming home from school and he hid up on the roof and boy did he get her a bute she looked like a snowman sick I know but it was funny

This is a good indicator that when you snow fell it was slightly below 0 degree Celsius. The snow will thus flake and crystalise much smaller which is sometimes called "dry" snow. The surface area is too little to bond successfully and thus you cannot form proper adhesion.

If the snow squeaks when you walk on it, you haven't got a hope of making a snowman.

If you can't make snowballs, you can't make a snowman.

We had the same problem building our first snowmen last Christmas - snow too dry. Hardy creatures that the kids and OH's cousin were they used jugs of water and soon they had a good sturdy snowman that lasted all winter!
