So, I looked at reviews and playstation apparently does more and gives more. I am officially going with playstation. I have made my final, yes FINAL decision, I think.....;) |

I would honestly ask your son which he would prefer, if he would like to play video games 'online' with all of his friends and they generally have one over the other then it would make more sense to buy the more popular in his social circle.

If I lived on my own I'd have a cat and a glass of wine with a nice music system...but I don't, so playstation it is then. It's so funny how a box full of wires and components the size of an ant can cause such discussion. I love to light the touch paper and watch the discussion light up! Boys, you do make me smile. :) |

There is such a thing as a pause button you know (or don't you have that on an Xbox?). ;) |

Re: Smart TV - would you?
Ok everybody, as you were.
Went to Best Buy to get decent HD tv and Playstation. Came out with a nice Samsung TV with $100 off and a Sony Internet Player with Google TV NSZ-GS7 with $30 off. The guy in the shop was very knowledgeable and we were really impressed with this gadget. I just know someone is going to come along and burst my bubble now though :sneaky: IT'S DONE.....no more tech talk! Yip! :p |
Re: Smart TV - would you?
Well done! Does this mean we won't see you around so much as you'll be too busy watching HD movies or that we won't be able to get rid of you :) because you now have the ability to post from your TV ?!! Thanks for updating and enjoy.

The Pi/TV is controlled with my mobile phone (android or Apple app) across the home WLAN. As long as you have a spare HDMI socket on your TV, you can achieve all your 'Smart' tv needs with a Pi and a little knowhow (all available via google) and £40. |

http://www.scoop.it/t/raspberry-pi/p...c-media-center I have a Raspberry Pi and Its a great piece of kit and i prefer it to my apple tv BUT i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is a technophobe (as the OP states she is) |
Re: Smart TV - would you?
Not a technophobe, but have paid scant attention to the TV add on devices as not much of a TV guy either. Looked at the Sony black box video posted above, so is that all you need to be able to browse the Internet / YouTube from the TV? Is the Pi the same sort of thing?

Re: Smart TV - would you?
Some people are just so tech savvy that it all seems simple to them.
I remember telling someone I wasn't good with computers so could they bear that in mind when they were going to give me an introductory session. Immediately he said something about configuring it. Years on I know enough to do what I want and that includes accessing the UK TV I'm interested in (some live) via my laptop and a download manager that speedily gives me stuff just a few hours after the UK broadcast. My wife's the techie one. On an unrelated computer issue a few weeks ago, she said "Why don't you just use "Unlocker" to clear it? I never heard of it. |
Re: Smart TV - would you?
'Tech savvy' just seems to mean 'knows how to read' these days.
None of this is difficult really and you don't need to be 'tech savvy' to do it. Don't let anyone tell you that running a computer program or plugging cables in requires any kind of expert knowledge. It doesn't. |
Re: Smart TV - would you?
I was in a hotel in London (UK) last week which had a "smart tv" in the room. Oddly, there was a little camera, quarter of an inch square, perched on top. Call me paranoid but I promptly covered the lens. I couldn't see why the lens was there.... there was no motion input required on any of the channels, including the game channel. Weird.

It's a very small circuit board that I've actually got flush behind the TV so you don't actually see it. I'm just finishing off the basement and am going to have a TV on the wall and I'll get another RPi for that TV and stick it behind the TV there with no wires hanging everywhere etc. |

Re: Smart TV - would you?
Well, it's like I said about the techie people - there will be "explanatory" terms used that just don't mean much to a lot of people.
It's not just me, hence the other puzzled posts. The business about parents leaving it to their kids to do stuff for them doesn't come from nowhere. |
Re: Smart TV - would you?
Yeah, its called not even trying.

It also has the UK catch-up programs on it.

Re: Smart TV - would you?
So, here I am, all connected (finally) to my new telly and Google TV gadget. It's a jolly good bit of kit...so much so that the internet chap who came to connect us said he was going to Best Buy on his way home to get the Google gadget (they're currently on offer - $30 off). Now as you can see from my previous conversation, I'm no tech-head but it was as easy as burning toast to set up, there're lots of fun things to do and we've signed up for Netflix already. There seem to be far more options than were available with a smart telly so I am really quite a happy bunny.
Will report back in a few days with my further findings....:) |

I got mine shipped from the UK by a friend within 2 weeks as the site here was saying they were sold out and a 3-4 month wait time. |
