Skype ?

Hello - Again!!!

I wondered if anyone knew anything about Skype?

I have it, and it's great, however when I'm speaking sometimes, especially to my brother in Houston - I sometimes can't hear him, and other times he sounds like some Darlick (SP) from Dr Who??! Why does this happen and how can it be fixed....

On another note - I was just talking to my mother on Skype, and for the first time, my brother came on line and we had a 3 way call? Being a novice, I didn't even realise you could do this, but it was amazing!!! It will be so useful when I move to keep in touch with my family back in the UK!!!!

Anyway - answers on a postcard about the odd voice thing!!

Bandit!

Hi Bandit

I am afraid i cannot answer your question but i have the same problems sometimes with ours and would like to hear the respondes.

when you have your 3 way conversation are you able to get the web cam working, as i find we can only talk ..though it is a good connection.

I had a three-way conversation with my two brothers with skype ... it was quite funny and rather confusing ... we had to resort to saying "over" each time we had finished speaking, cos there was a bit of time delay, especially with the brother in Turks and Caicos .... :p

I use it for contacting companies in the UK - you can make free 0800 calls on it, which is useful if you need to speak to your bank, credit card company or whatever in the UK.

It does sometimes take 5 attempts and you need to repeat everything, but then it's free so I can't complain. I'd be hacked off if I was getting that poor quality and paying for it.

Hubby seems to think that the dalek voice may be down to the bandwith available at the time....?? we use Skype to call the UK and its just been amazing very rarely get bad quality, the internet connection in this apartment seems to be very fast though, so perhaps that helps.

The silence bit might have something to do with your usb phone/headphones settings if your using one, our 'Audio input' setting seems to reset itself to low/mute sometimes, don't know why.

There seems to be lots of variables that determine call quality, connection speed, CPU, time of day, phases of the moon ;), but we found that making sure we were both using exactly the same version of the software seemed to help (well a bit !)

I love Skype - we use it for long distance Canadian calls, Skype to Skype calls to UK, South Africa, USA and New Zealand as well as Skype Out calls to much the same places and more often than not we have a really good clear connection and the costs are quite reasonable.

Re: Skype ?

If we get a bad connection - quite rare - we just hang up and try again. When speaking to a friend in NZ there is often a background noise, a bit like a low level 'crowd' noise !!

The 'trying it again' policy usually works, for a while anyway.

On the whole, it's been great.

Try a three way chat with two drunk mates, when it's only about 11am here - now that is hard work, but a giggle ....

Skype is great. I use it for talking to parents and family back home all the time. Call quality can be variable depending it seems on how many people are using it at the time. Three way calling is voice only, no video.

Re: Skype ?

We use it. We have an actual phone here in Canada linked to the network running Skype. We have a SkypeIn number in the UK that friends and family can call and it rings our phone, saves them money. Only real issue with it is that you can't get a Canadian number for Skype at the moment due to the Canadian regulatory body not granting them a license as you cannot make emergency 911 calls through the system.

Just google 'Skype' and you'll find what you are looking for. You need to download it ...

If you wish to have up to 6 people at once via a video link try http://wwwl.meebo.com/. It supports a lot of the most popular messaging clients, no software to download & no registration required, just tell all the people you wish to talk to to go to the site site and away you go and its FREE, simple as that. Works ok really weird when you have more than 2 people.
