India will be India i suppose, they have their own laws and what we say wont stop them from being India, a country that still uses slaves is not exactly guna be debating the death penalty

A new study has put the number of people in modern slavery worldwide at an estimated 29.8 million. India tops the list for nation-wise figures, with almost 14 million people trapped in different forms of slavery

I think the death penalty is a just punishment for the crime committed, and will probably be carried out at the corner Karaoke bar as a half time entertainment segment

Whilst discussing the weather here on Friday, after the snowstorm, a most eminent paediatrician here told me...."the weather here can be dreadful, so it's like rape...you just hope you can enjoy some part of it". A phrase like that I would never have heard in Europe, certainly not in mixed company in public from anyone with a modicum of education. Women are routinely treated as third class citizens in North America, why is it so shocking when it's elsewhere.

No. Capital punishment is wrong in all and every circumstance. Why it would appear to be a subject for discussion when it happens in India seems puzzling, when it's OK if it happens 'up the road' in the 'civilized' good old US of A.

I don't normally play with your 'incendiary' posts Montreal Mike, but I admit all....I am waiting in the car park for a kid who is having more fun than finding his mother!

actually India has nothing to do with it

the link to India was simply food for thought

I just happened to notice a BBC news item and it got me thinking whether this country needs to reinstate the death penalty

There was no other agenda

As for the 'eminent paediatrician', well that comment is in poor taste and kinda reminds me of what my grannie told me some 60 years ago of marriages in Victorian England where the virgin bride-to-be was told, by her own mum, to lie back, get it over with, while thinking of England.

So one paediatrician made a derogatory comment and you say all of North America treats women like third class citizens? I think you need to actually live somewhere where woman are treated like third class citizens - Afganistan, Saudi, Sudan perhaps - to see just how well women are treated in North America.

Dorothy I would be horrified about that remark for personal reasons. While it doesn't tar all, I would think about reporting it. There is simply no way a remark like that should be made. Just because assaults occur in a first world country doesn't make it less of an offence.

I would have said something to him as well. And it certainly does not tar all North Americans because one man make a remark he should not have.

Who said anything about assaults happening by the way? I was commenting on Millie's remark that North America treats women like third class citizens.

The way women are treated are not limited to third world countries that's all. I can't actually believe that a doctor would make that comment. It's beyond an accidental "slip up"...

actually I have a big grin as I write

Some 50 years ago when i embarked on a career as a bean-counter there was a girl in training along with some 30 guys.

Recently I had to visit an accounting firm to speak with a partner. I asked him what had happened to all the men. Nowhere to be found he said. The women had taken over. That was an exaggeration of course but the women sure outnumbered the men.

In Law there are lots of women, as is the case in Medicine.

at this rate men will become third class citizens;)

But in the top jobs?

I know back in surgery, there was a certain grimace that came from the male doctors talking about the "child bearing doctors". Sexism is still alive and well in Surgery.

I've lived in two out of those three as it happens. That's what makes me so cross. I have always been treated pretty well in the Middle East and North Africa...on a daily basis one lives with a casual disregard for the female here in North America that I have never experienced in Europe. It's so talked about in third world countries, they are aware of their shortcomings, and have a strong educated female network that help to make women an active subject for discussion. Many Middle Eastern and African countries are particularly deferential, and have had female politicians...India is evidently different (not on the politician front) although I backpacked round there several times and was uncomfortable at times...much like here.

Come to visit me outside the Morgantaler clinic at 7am in the morning whilst people shove banners in the faces of distressed young women who have no financial support from the Province if they decide to terminate a pregnancy, or my friend who works for the Rape Crisis Centre...once again, unfunded.

How come the majority of people who get to Death Row in the States are Black?

If I were going to reinstate Capital Punishment, I'd like to know that all the populace knew the rules....and we'd all started from the same standpoint.

There are lots of great things in North America being female, black, poor or unrepresented and alone isn't probably one of them.

top jobs ?

probably not so in Accounting

I found out most do not stick around long enough to make partner

Many will have children and it doesn't fit in their lifestyle

But the point is that women sure have progressed

Yes, we've done really well, even in accounting if we take our shoes and socks off we can get as far as 20.

Give me strength:blink:
