Shopping in downtown Toronto
 

Went to Toronto downtown first time today. Was a bit surprised. Would anyone be kind enough to let me know if we have areas like Oxford street or Picadilly Circus in Toronto downtown?

Actually wanted to do some high street shoppings and enjoy some good food!

i worked in Eton Centre most shops there - then all the underground shops

Ha! When we first arrived, we stayed in the Delta Chelsea. We walked out, down Yonge to the lake, back up to Bloor and back to the hotel. We asked where the "downtown" was and were aghast to hear that we'd seen it. The nearest place like Oxford St. is Fifth Avenue, the nearest place like Piccadilly Circus is Times Square.

Enjoy Toronto for what it is, a mellow collection of ethnic neighbourhoods with great food. People who live in Toronto shop in Buffalo.

I was in that underground bit near the train station / Royal York recently. I needed an emergency pair of shoes to go with a suit..... couldn't find a pair for less than $500. One shop had starting prices of $800. :eek:

Needless to say, I wore the brown shoes I'd travelled in with my black suit. Nobody noticed 'cos we were all pissed!:lol:

Er, sorry, the point of that anecdote was do you really want to shop in downtown Toronto?? Shop in Buffalo, as Dbd suggests.

Sad, perhaps, but true. One wonders if an American has ever set foot in the Walden Galleria.

(Note that I speak here of fashion, housewares, dog food, items that people do not usually eat. Cheese and pig parts are readily available in Toronto).

There is something a bit soul destroying about underground shops. Having said they, the atmospheric British high street is toast. Slowly being dismantled by the twin powers of destination shopping malls and online juggernauts.

In far too long living in Toronto, I never went into the tunnels to buy things. What cannot be purchased at the market is available at the Loblaws on Queen's Quay. I believe there's a Metro down there somewhere but that's expensive and I'd get lost.

The High Street shopping experience is the Eaton Centre :D

As for the food part - loads of great food about - you just heave to have a bit of a look for it.

I live and work in Toronto and know plenty of people here. I only know one person from work who goes shopping in Buffalo (He lives in Stoney Creek though).

I would day that most shopping is done in the malls - Eaton Centre, Yorkdale, Vaughan Mills and Sherway Gardens

Thirty plus years in Toronto. I've been to Sherway Gardens twice, the Eaton Centre three times and neither of the others. What do you buy in these places?
