Saying "no" at the end of a question?
Admittedly it's a pet peeve, but have you started using the awful "no" at the end of an interrogative sentence? Where you might normall use "isn't it" "doesn't it" or even estuary "innit"? Adding an "eh" is one thing, it can be ironic or a genuine attempt to adopt Canadian speech patterns, but "no?" is just plain annoying, no? It's even creeping into British speech would you believe.

Re: Saying "no" at the end of a question?
Canadians by definition are going to speak weird. Half of them speak French.

Re: Saying "no" at the end of a question?
Just as bad as "right" at the end of sentences, right?
|
Re: Saying "no" at the end of a question?
Good point geedee, but with "right" you're confirming a positive so it sounds natural. Eg. You're coming out with us tonight, right? But with "no" you're asking someone to reconsider a contrary position with a single (short) word? I suppose it's efficient, but to me it sounds a bit glib somehow.
Anyway, I don't think this is the right room for an argument ... |

Then why did you start the thread? Anyway, I prefer the original full form British version of "no" at the end of a sentence, nowha'imean?
The slightly obtuse comment at the end of my post is a subtle reference to a Python sketch triggered by an earlier phrase. Nevermind, it really is getting all too silly. |

I like like "know'wha'I'mean too" but it's different usage, innit. It's for "right".
