First time in the Prairies and found folks warmer and more down to earth than Vancouverites, what's up there? :p

I helped out our prairie branch for a couple of weeks following the flooding and have to say people in the praries are so laid back compared to BC people.

Still the settler mentality. Rural BC is much the same. Vancouver is very much a city with city lifestyles. Few old families left there now, mostly newcomers. Neighbours are not really dependent on each other as they are in rural communities.

Dude, you should go over to Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands sometime. It's much different than Vancouver in the sense that it's more laid-back and more at ease. Last week, I discussed this same topic with a friend of mine who travels back and forth between the island(s) and mainland at least twice a month. However, be forewarned that traveling to the island (specifically Nanaimo) is crazy expensive since public transportation is very inefficient for anyone who doesn't have a car (or doesn't want to pay a hefty fine to put one on the ferry).

Good observation, we are nicer. Of course there are wonderful people in Vancouver as well but most of them come from here.:lol:

It is but it's not an ideal place to be if you're under the age of 40. Or if you don't have a family.

I honestly can't wait to move back to Vancouver....

I've only spend significant time in Alberta, and Ontario other then BC, but everywhere seems more down to earth then Vancouver. If it wasn't for the weather and scenery, Vancouver wouldn't have anything, but I don't really fit into Vancouver in general.....

All this talk about Saskatchewan being a nicer alternative to BC is sort of making feel a little disappointed about not getting to work in rural Saskatchewan instead of not-so-rural-yet-still-not-urban BC. But whatever, it's easy for me to cut my losses, pick up my gains (that aren't present in Saskatchewan's 1000-strong town) and run with them.

I wouldn't worry too much, there are a bunch of Saskatchewanites (and Albertans) in BC. You can usually tell they're from Saskatchewan because they're the only Canadians that seem to care about the CFL.

I wonder why the culture in Vancouver is so different. When I arrive am I just going to be surrounded by stick insects with yoga mats and their low fat soya, organic, free range, gluton free Starbucks frappacino - hold the cream..?

Depends on where you go and the luck of the draw - of course we're having a little fun with the stereotype/generalisation and Vancouver has millions who won't fit it. All that holistic nonsense will be much easier to find in Vancouver than other places though if that's what you're after. One theory I have about the prairie people retaining the "helping hand" pioneer ethic is that we have to help each other during the occasional hard winter (:rofl:) and if that's true eastern Canada is probably catching up a little after the last one.
