Salt. . . .???
I used to buy Tesco's table salt, it was my family's favourite before I left for a new life. Can you get it over here? Any suggestions now I'm in Canada?

Thats a tough one and I feel your pain, longing for the familiarity of days gone by is totally normal.
You have a couple of options, you can either get some shipped over, or you can try Walmart - i'm sure they do free flow salt in a box - so whilst its not the same as a plastic tub - you can close your eyes, grab some lemon and tequila and pretend you are back there again. |

Re: Salt. . . .???
I've got some sifto salt - it's Canadian made and tastes fresher than that crap you get in your typical british supermarkets. It's one of the reasons I emigrated.

There's a British shop that's only 200km away. I might be able to get some there? I love living in Canada but some times no mater how much you persevere, you miss the benefits of civilisation. :(
Never underestimate home comforts. |

Re: Salt. . . .???
Well this thread gave me a good laugh before going to bed.
...the sad thing is a while ago I did get slightly excited when I saw Sea Salt in a plastic container like that in Santa Barbara instead of the boxed salt you usually see in supermarkets here. |

Re: Salt. . . .???
For a suitable donation I could ship you some over? Do you also need Marmite, Weetabix, and Cadburys etc?

How are things back in the motherland? Issues with a seriously ill parent in France is not quite so good, so job hunting is on hold whilst I trot backwards and forwards.

I guess that could be the area I am in, but I have seen none of what is portrayed in the media. I saw the same sort of thing in Canada, nowhere is Utopia, you make the best of what is around you. |
Re: Salt. . . .???
Pleased you are enjoying it, I would consider coming back to the UK when I am older, depends on what the children and grandchildren are doing. Of course I have to get to Canada first! It is all about the perception, for sure it is better than many parts of the world I have travelled, many out there would give there back teeth to live in UK.
I bet we have a shortage of salt in UK this winter, we ran out in the shops last year. Everyone was putting it down on the paths because broken britain councils ran out of rock/grit salt. Enough of my rambling... |
Re: Salt. . . .???
I don't believe the councils are responsible for salting people's paths and driveways.
I don't believe it is about perception. I believe it depends on whether you came from craphole or a nice area, just like anywhere in the world. |

Re: Salt. . . .???
Some random dates on AC:
YYZ-LAX just under $600 return LHR-LAX just over $700 return So even if you want to visit places in the USA it's not much more expensive from LHR than YYZ (especially if you factor in the cost of a cab to YYZ). |

Buffalo NY to Salt Lake City UT, $439 return Buffalo NY to New Orleans LA, $323 return A couple of hours drive to Buffalo, a relaxing night in the Holiday Inn before an early departure. They'll even keep your car in the car park, free for hotel guests. Now we're talking ;) |

We're not hermits. This year we went riding at Bryce Canyon and on the North Antrim coast. Last year Arizona and Makinac Island. Still, from London one can easily visit Paris, from Toronto one can easily visit Buffalo NY or Erie PA. There's cause to look wistfully at London.
By the way, you can fly from Toronto to a world class city in NYC via Porter from the downtown airport. They recently had a 50% seat sale on all flights which we took advantage of. |

Well, continue looking at London through rose tinted spectacles because - trust me, I lived there the past ten years - and it is not an easy place to live at all and is about to get a lot tougher. So, yes, accessibility to Yerp is great but what do you do when get home from your city break to a place that's crime ravaged, has shit public schools, high unemployment, inflation rising, and closing hospitals?

Not so sure about that. The daughter and her partner are both in the trauma business and both have jobs at expanding, unrelated, trauma units. You do need lots of money of course but, in return, it's a big exciting city. Toronto's alright but it's like moving to Harrow, slower, safer, a step into old age.
(And yes I was disingenuous in not mentioning NYC and Montreal, accessible big cities). This hospital was near us. It, like a few hospitals in the UK, will not last long without immediate action. Great that your daughter and partner work in a stable environment and good luck to them but this is a reality. Toronto's not perfect, nowhere is. But I can say for sure that healthcare is pretty good here. I did like a lot about London - culture, bars, galleries and my Spurs of course. But, living there day to day now? No chance. |

I've always felt a bit far from any action in Toronto, that the place tries relentlessly hard but is really just another bland American city, Omaha but colder; hence my intermittent envy for them having moved somewhere exciting. Good things I've found about healthcare in Toronto are: - very good trauma units - easy to get treated while in the country without documentation - lots of walk-in clinics so little waiting Less impressive things: - no long term provision for the mentally ill - drugs and surgical appliances expensive - poor treatment for the disabled for the disabled for matters unrelated to the disability; if, for example, you have autism and a broken leg, it's a bugger to find anyone to take an interest in the leg It's a good place to get shot. Not a good place to have cerebral palsy. |

I expect they'll have a few years of enjoying urbanism then move somewhere else in Europe. The only concern I've heard so far is the price of houses, a shock when you're used to Toronto, their rent on a two bedroomed flat is more per week than the mortgage was monthly for her house on the Danforth. Still, she couldn't walk to work from the Danforth.

Just last week I went to Hockney's iPad exhibition at ROM; recently, I saw the AbEx of NY exhibition at AGO ...Lots more stuff going. Lots more. Don't paint this picture because it's all a bit abstract yourself. We live off Danforth and rent a house out in London, so would entirely agree with you there. |

A good place to get shot in the sense of there being easy access to medical staff experienced in such matters at no cost.
