What a horrid thought!

I have a bit of a hump with 'religion' in Canada as it happens, they are so bloody hellfire about it all...you meet families of Catholics who have six kids and you actually can imagine that the couple had sex 6 times! I am Very airy fairy, but will give most groups some form of a punt....but here it's a soulless lot of do gooding miseries. I am starting to feel a bit rude about smug Canadian Christians

Catholicism does seem like an angry religion over here.

That's the head in the sand option, and admittedly it wide spread amongst the educated who choose not to think.

Did you ask to be excused from it.....surely the work place has the right to dictate, and anyone that doesn't like it, can go work elsewhere?

It's like a dress code....take or leave it

That would look collegiate at a leaving do.

Religion is not like a dress code, it's like a mind code, and it doesn't have any place in work, school (or beyond).

that the issue today in quebec with this odious so called 'charter of values' which has yet to be passed into law whereby religious headgear will be verboten in the public service. It does not bother me to be treated by a physician wearing a turban or jihab or kipa. Competency is all I care about

It always amazes me that so many people apply that attitude to the work place as if, somehow, businesses may be excluded from the laws of the land.

Are Friday spankings allowed if the boss dictates it?

No, those are fine. Not exactly what your photo depicted, however.

How about being treated by someone with dozens of facial piercings, are you ok with that?

I agree with you. Religion should be kept out of work and school unless it's a catholic or other religious school or work place. In German public school there is an option of religious education or ethnic education which teaches world believes and different options of believing or non believing. Also teachers in public schools are not allowed to show any support for any kind of religion i.e. visibly wear a crucifix or a headscarf as it's the teacher's obligation to keep religious expressions out of the classroom.

I spent most of my school time in catholic schools. Didn't harm me, my kids go to catholic school, we pray in the evening, I teach them kindness and respect. I believe that there is life after death and that we should forgive each other. I don't hold the grudge because Karma is a bitch and I have friends that are catholic, Jewish, Muslim or believe nothing and I respect that. It's important that they are nice to me and genuine and kind and not what they do or don't believe.

And Christmas is a religious holiday after all, Christ's mass celebrates the birth of Jesus. I don't dispute that over the years the rituals and traditions have been influence by many cultures and non religious heritage and that it has been adopted by loads of different cultures. I even have a Muslim friend that celebrates it because she likes the tree and lights and presents but it's origin is the birth of Jesus so it's religious whatever you call it.

The thing I don't understand is why it is so unpopular to believe. There is a significant difference between faith and institutionalised religion. I think it's wrong that the catholic church doesn't acknowledges gays, I disagree with the "protection" of priests that have done wrong in any way. But that has nothing to do with me believing in a life after death, in God, in the 10 commandments, in kindness and forgiveness......so why does that seem so old fashioned and "uncool"? And why are so many non believers so incredibly smug when someone admits to faith?

Each to their own whatever makes us happy and helps us cope with the challenges of life!

Thank you for your sincere comment. Moderate religion as you describe it has very little wrong with it, and tolerance of different faiths is generally a good thing. However, for us growing band of dis-believers, the problem is that it is all based on a fiction. Once you know that there is no sun god or sea god, you see the whole enterprise as a delusion. It's all based on myths that were set down a couple of thousand of years ago. We are smug in the same way that you might be smug when you see First Nations people worshiping a big salmon in the sky or something like. We understand the mythology, and the human need for something greater, but at the same time, we know that there is no big salmon, and that they are living a (harmless) self deception.

Not anymore. And it's origin is not Christian, that's not true, historical research says otherwise. Merry KRISMIS!

I personally don't give a rats what people believe, what I have an issue with is when people take those beliefs, which are, after all, not based in scientific fact or evidence-based research, and try and impose them by attempting to influence the laws of the land.

MY issue with religions is that they are based on a very ancient and disproven view of reality. IMO believers need to prepare themselves to become even more of a minority - non-believers are the fastest growing segment of society.
