Reclamation/salvage yards
Do such things exist in Alberta? We're looking for lights.

Re: Reclamation/salvage yards
Hmmmm a quick glance at google pulls up this place in Calgary http://www.uniquities.ca/store/index.php maybe there isn't too much around because there aren't enough architectural gems around to warrant lots of 'yards' of things
What sorts of lights are you after? Maybe it's worth visiting some 'antique' places? I remember there being a nice little one out by Erskine on the main highway - just east of your old lake house? I've posted a couple of wanted ads on Red Deer buy and sell for things i've had trouble getting hols of - and been lucky both times - so you could try putting up something similar on there. Alternatively there's the obvious Kijiji, or if the worst comes to the worst buy new that look old  Sorry can't be more help, but I reckon there just isn't the amount of stuff out there in AB like there might be in places like Toronto / Vancouver. However if you do plan on visiting the calgary one - give me a shout and i'll come along for a snoop too  Holy hell - scratch that - just checked the website and saw the prices eeeeeeeek! One more thing I will add is that (and no offence to Canadians on here) but the maority of Canadians I have met presume if something is old it is both a)antique and therefore b) worth a lot of money - so you might find your period lights cost about 5 times more than some reproduction ones!!! |
Re: Reclamation/salvage yards
If you've already checked the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Red Deer the next place I'd look is under building demolition in the yellow pages. Those outfits often have salvage and a phonecall is free. Look under used building materials and scan through building materials as well. Sometimes electrical contractors will have stock hidden away that was surplus to a job or refused. I've found a few fixtures that way.

Thanks guys, I did find a website of reproduction stuff which might work for us. I'd just have to be resuscitated after the shipping charges though:eek::thumbdown: These thoughts all happened after watching Salvage Hunter last night:thumbdown: Oh for some choice.... |
Re: Reclamation/salvage yards
Id offer to ship something out to you, but would imagine the shipping/postage would be more than the item, as thats what I tend to find when I ship/post stuff to my sister, niece and nephew the cost is normally double the price of the item. But more than happy to help if possible, send me a PM and I will see if I can find anything like it in the UK and let you know what the shipping/postage will cost.
Thanks Mike |

Re: Reclamation/salvage yards
There's a shop in Airdrie called "Where on earth did you get that?" They claim to have antiques etc.
Now I have never been in there, I don't think they have particularly high end stuff but might be worth a try. Helen |
Re: Reclamation/salvage yards
Sorry to jump on this thread, but I'd be interested to know of any not-Toronto-prices reclamation/salvage yards within 50-100 miles of Toronto?
I agree that the thinking in these parts is old = expensive. I had thought that was just because I'm in Toronto, but maybe not! I've googled places in Toronto, but wanted to know if anyone has personal recommendations. I'll check out the links already suggested too and see what they have for TO. |
