Reciprocal living and working rights backed in UK, Australia, NZ and Canada

Poll shows ‘overwhelming support’ for granting nationals reciprocal rights to live and work freely in each other’s countries

Reciprocal living and working rights backed in UK, Australia, NZ and Canada | World news | The Guardian

These sorts of stories have been in the British press for the last year or so. Just as an experiment, I conducted a little straw poll in my Toronto workplace. I asked my colleagues what they thought about closer integration between Canada and a newly independent Britain. The reactions varied from bafflement over disdain, to ridicule. Perhaps because they are Chinese, Armenian, Guyanese, Slovak, Finnish-Indian (Findian), Jewish, Italian Canadians, a reflection of demographic reality really.

I think the "white commonwealth" is a long dead idea.

If Britain left the EU then I see no reason why this would be an issue for as long as the Queen is head of state.

You would be surprised about the number of 'white Canadians' who are shocked when I tell them I had to take an English test for my PR application and then say 'but you are British, you invented the language. You should just be able to come over here'

Not such a dead idea to them!

Did you? It's been a long time since I applied for PR but I'm sure there was something (sensible) that exempted me.

If that's all you have to do then be it, and anyone who wants to skip that part can by all means move to a non queen country. By by

I think it was 2004 for me but I remember quoting my English o- level just to be sure.

You didn't have to for any skilled based routes like FSW and CEC before 2015. It was a new rule for Express Entry.

Spousal sponsorship for me. I just remember the question but something meant I didn't have to do it. Completed school in the UK, maybe? I really don't remember. Maybe spousal sponsorship was the exemption.

There are plenty of British born and bred posters on here who would struggle to get decent marks in an English exam.

This has bee kicked around for a while now. It seems largely a proposal promoted by people who don't meet the criteria for immigration under the current system.
